Another Old Doctors’ Tale:

I’m hoping we’ll get some good figures on this soon – but since I’ve been

thinking about it & now it’s come up at least twice – I can’t help myself:

Today’s “Old Doctors’ Tale” is:

That thing about how having a hyst guarantees you won’t have to have more

surgery for fibroids later.

Well, ja – not for fibroids.

BUT – might be for a different reason after the hyst:

MANY WOMEN REQUIRE FURTHER ABDOMINAL SURGERY POST-HYSTERECTOMY TO CORRECT

SIDE-EFFECTS OF THE HYSTERECTOMY – things like prolapses of various types,

etc.

So – it may well be a question of would you rather take a chance of having

to further treat fibroids(possibly with an abdominal surgery – possibly by a

less invasive method).

OR – would you PREFER to have a hyst and take a chance of having to

have further abdominal surgery for prolapse – or some other condition?

If you’re trying to avoid further abdominal surgery – I’m not so sure that

hysterectomy is any better than myomectomy -- though the surgery you risk

needing post hyst certainly won't be for uterine fibroids.

If I were choosing WHICH SORT of subsequent surgery I’d rather risk – well,

I’d much prefer risking having to further treat fibroids than having to deal

with most sorts of post-hyst prolapses.

Sometimes the truth . . . isn’t the WHOLE truth . . .

Best to All,

Pat
