Just to add my two cents for clarification--not all AFOs are metal. Mine are

plastic one piece (no hinges at the ankle) construction that go under the

foot all the way from the toes, under the entire foot and up the back of the

leg to the knee. There are a couple of Velcro straps that hold the leg

portion to the leg. Our dear departed friend, Alan, had leather and metal

AFOs with hinges at the ankles, so driving was easier than with the kind I

have, but his were very heavy and I have enough weakness to make that kind

impractical. By the way, they are expensive, too, without insurance.
