Thanks for your response. My son has a Danmar helmet, and we see

orthotic specialties in Euclid Ohio. The pediatric neurosurgeon was

Dr at Rainbow & Babies hospital in Cleveland. I know they

took measurements when he was casted.

It is just the more I read, the more I realize how much I do not

know. I am going to call the ortho Monday morning. I just want the

best for my son.

Thanks,

I am in the same boat as you are. Our Orthotist and Pediatric Neurosurgeon have

both said basically not to worry about the numbers and that we will see the

improvement visually. I was told that everyone has a different cephalic index

and that it doesn't matter. My daughter has had her band for 6 weekd now, the

first month was a waste because there were several problems with the fit, but

now it is fitting well and I have had the helmet on her for 23 hours a day over

the last 2 weeks and I am starting to see an improvement. As far as

measurements go, the Neurosurgeon measured my daughter at the first visit, but

at the follow up visits they don't measure at all. Please post if you find

anything else out on this topic, I would be interested.

Hi group, I just had my daughter's head measured at AOI by Mohammad (for the locals). My daughter has a 1 cm difference. Is that considered mild? Anyone else put their child in a band or helmet with 1 cm difference?? Just curious. thanks, Barbie __________________________________________________

I think 4 mm asymmetry is great. My daughter had brachy and graduated at 85%. I

know our specialist likes to see all his patients get below 90% if they can. I

wanted to quit when she was about 87/88% and he convinced me to continue until

she had outgrown the band and gotten additional correction. So his philosphy is

to get the number as low as possible. I'm glad we did that. Even now I still see

the imperfections in her head, and sometimes wish we had gotten more correction

(although I think she looks good if you're not hyper aware like I am)

" goal " measurements are for assymmetry and cephalic index. My son has gone down

to 4mm assymetry and 93% cephalic index (from 8 mss and 97%) since Jan 30 (with

3 weeks out of helmet due to various skin infections). The orthotist thinks we

have approx. 4 weeks more to go.

Thanks. I've definitely seen an improvement...esp. when I compare pics. If we

stopped now, I think I wouldn't worry about his head shape too much, and

hope/assume it will continue to round out a bit more over time on its own. But

I'm hoping the next month will bring some additional rounding and make it even

better. I'll keep him in it as long as it fits and he has no other problems, and

for now he's happy, but he's had a few skin infections (none in the last few

weeks, though!), so if he gets another one and needs a third round of

antibiotics, I'll just call it a day and be happy with the improvement we've

already gotten. But if he continues happy and healthy, we'll keep with it until

he outgrows the band. I hope that's what happens! If we hadn't had the

infections, I think he would be done now since he's been growing so fast, but he

was out of it for several weeks during significant growth, unfortunately.

Here are what the typical measurements mean:

Plagio Severity:

0-3 mm is normal

<6 mm is very mild

6-10 mm is mild

10-15 mm is moderate

15+ mm is severe

Brachycephaly Severity:

Cephalic Ratio = Cranial Breadth/Cranial Length

ideal ratio - 78%

normal - 73-83%

moderate - 83.1% to 87.9%

severe - 88% and higher
