Cathy,

Have you joined the " embo " group on Yahoo? That group is wonderful and there

is a lot of women there (and docs) who should be able to answer your

questions on the procedure. I had the UAE about 14 months ago and have had good

results. It was so much better than having major surgery and the recovery is

not

bad. I never had much pain either. If it had not been for this and the embo

group, I probably never would have heard of UAE's since my gyn does not

recommend them to his patients. Good luck.

HI!

I am a 46 and have a several uterine fibroids. There is only one though,

that is giving me problems. It is 16cm or 6 inches big and I have been

advised to do one of the following:

either take Lupron injections, have a UAE performed or the usual, a

hysterectomy. I was told a myomectomy was out of the question because the

largest fibroid was too large. I think a hysterectomy is too drastic. So

I have been looking up information on UAE. I have read some good things

about it and some bad. I have several questions, one of which is why must I

have pieces of plastic put inside to block the arteries? Will these pieces

dissolve after I go through menopause? Can they take them out after I have

been through menopause or maybe after the fibroids are shrunk? Will these

cause hemorraging or other problems?

I have not been able to get into the message board to see if anyone else

has this problem or these questions so I apologize if I am asking something

that has already been asked.

Thank you for the information.

I hope to attend the meetup here in Seattle.

Thanks

Cathy

Cathy,

A myo shouldn't be out of the question if your doctor

knew how to perform one. There are women here who have

had a 23cm fibriod and some who have multiple fibroids

measuring 16cm and more. A skilled surgeon will remove

your fibroid and not your uterus. UAE is another

option and you would need to talk to an IR.

I think your getting the " hysterectomy speech " because

of two reasons like most of us with " more mature "

uteri. Your 46 and done with it (ohhhh do I hate that

one) and that your doctor lacks the skills to do a

myo.

Please get a second opinion from a qualified Gyn or RE

and speak to a qualified IR (to see if your fibroid is

a candidate) before you make your decision. Fibriods

are benign tumors. You have time to make your

decision. Don't feel pressured to have a hysterectomy.

Be informed!

Good Luck,

Diane
