I just don't know where to get insurance and how much it will cost - or if I can afford it. Besides, would this not be classified as a pre-existing condition? Yes, fibroids will be considered a pre-existing condition, but that will not prevent you from getting insurance. It WILL prevent you from getting the optimum insurance rates. But the HIPAA law makes available to you individual insurance (albeit at higher rates), provided you meet several conditions (i.e. you don't have other insurance, have exhausted any COBRA insurance available to you, etc.) I shared my story about getting HIPAA coverage, having a myo, then a little over a year later, re-applying for and getting approved for " preferred " insurance rates. Search the archives for message #43931 for the details. BTW - even though you may find HIPAA rates to be very high, it is VERY worth it if you're considering surgery for your fibroids. One benefit of insurance is the negotiated rates with doctors and hospitals - it makes a huge difference paying for the insurance and getting the negotiated rates vs. paying out of pocket.
