One of the best web sites is http://www.myomectomy.net/right4me.htm

If you can't get that page, just do a search on Dr Indman.

A lot of great sites can be found in the Links and keyword searches.

Try also http://www.netreach.net/~hysterectomyedu/myomecto.htm (or

search Dr. Toaff.

There are different approaches to fibroids besides hysterectomy and

the most suitable approaches depend on various factors, such as the

severity of symptoms, whether you might possibly want children in

the future, age, other health problems, the size, location and type

of the fibroids, whether you'll be able to take X weeks off work

resting, and so forth.

The myomectomy is a popular choice because, all being well it will

remove the fibroids and preserve fertility. Even when a woman is

sure that she doesn't want any more children there may be reasons

why she chooses a myomectomy over a hysterectomy. The three

different types of myo just refer to three different access routes

to the fibroids. It depends where your fibroids are (and above

reasons) as to which a surgeon can/should perform for you. Some

women have keyhole surgery by the navel. Others have a vertical or

horizontal longer incision. I had the horizontal scar and it's well

hidden by brief knickers and virtually invisible anyhow. Sometimes

women who have had myomectomies will get (different) uterine

fibroids again in their lives. Ask whether they will be removing all

of the fibroid(s) before the operation.

UAE involves cutting off the blood supply to a fibroid so that it

shrinks inside a woman. Pellets are pumped into an artery. See

Yahoo 'embo' group. It's possible to stillget pregnant after UAE,

but it may not be the first choice for women who still want

children, because of alleged risks to fertility, that you'll want to

research to see if they're true, if you go down that path.

Some women decide to live with their fibroids. If they plan to have

children they should see a gynaecologist for advice on whether their

fibroids will effect their fertility. Yahoo 'ttc myomectomy' group

(Trying to conceive) If you live with them you should get them

monitored for growth and change once in a while, always mention them

when discussing birth control and other medications with doctors.

Hormones may effect fibroids. If they grow bigger it may alter your

treatment options, so be careful there. Some women regret watching

them grow bigger. Women approaching the menopause may purposefully

wait it out. Be careful of HRT choices too.

There are other types of treatment listed on fibroid web sites and

fibroid books. All of these treatments have their pros and cons.

Once you know a treatment doesn't match your goals, it's one less to

worry about. Be careful information from any source is accurate

theough by comparing it against other sources. We already expect web

sites to sometimes be inaccurate, but books and doctors can also get

it wrong at times.

Amazon shows about 26 fibroid titles,(Well worth getting ones that

tell you what fibroids are, what the symptoms are, what the

treatments are and what tests involve etc. The Sisterhood Network

(online fibroid charity)is another source of these titles. High

street bookshops have a much, much smaller range.

If you are in the UK, check out Smartgroups UK forum. 'The Fibroid

Place' is another useful fibroid forum (See this site's Links).

Aztek

There are also different types of hysterectomy, removing more, or

less.
