Use of Lupron

Ladies, I'm posting this to both the uterinefibroids and embo boards. I am

seeking advice/clearer info on the use of Lupron to shrink fibroids. I went to

my ob/gyn today for my " annual exam " . I have had two UAEs (first in 3/02,

second on 9/03) however I am still having some bulk related symptoms, though a

good share of my urinary problems are gone. Anyway, today my ob/gyn said that

if after my 6 mo. MRI (next week) if the fibroids are still enlarged with

minimal shrinkage that she recommends a 6 month course of Lupron. She

furthermore was under the understanding that Lupron may not only shrink

fibroids, but they may not grow back after discontinuation. IS THAT CORRECT??

In my research on the web and elsewhere I have read that usually fibroids return

within 6 mo. of discontinuation. She didn't mention hysterectomy this

time--which was a surprise to me. I have been considering trying to find a

surgeon to do a myo, even after UAE.

I have had other problems with inaccurate info from this ob/gyn, and have caught

her telling me things I know to not be true from medical literature. Please let

me know if anyone has heard of this type of use of Lupron, whether it is

effective. I am going to be 40 yrs old in a couple of weeks. I would love to

be able to avoid surgery, but I don't want to damage my health. Let me hear

your feedback, please. -Elise, MN.

Elise,

To my knowlege Lupron is not even approved for use as a long term

means to shrink fibroids (although this may be a side-effect of being

on Lupron) After the Lupron is stopped the fibroids will return to

their original size (In looking at my Lupron insert, it says " Mean

time to return to pretreatment uterine size was 8.3 months " ). It

does not sound like your Doc. has all her facts strait....it also

sounds like you are doubting her.....go with your gut.....but I

really think that you should get yourself another opinion.

The fibroids will grow after you discontinue the Lupron. Your ob/gyn needs to

find a new

line of work.
