Texas suits could drag HMOs into state court

Ruby Calad vividly remembers a few details about the hours after her

hysterectomy in 1999: The pain. And the moment when her doctor angrily

revealed that Cigna HealthCare of Texas was refusing to pay for more

than 24 hours of recuperation in the hospital.

Calad couldn't afford $1,500 to cover another night's stay herself. So

she went home.

Anti-Hysterectomy Play Announces 52-City Tour

An unusual alignment of social activism, foundation philanthropy, and

theatrical entrepreneurship will propel " un becoming, " an

Off-Off-Broadway play that ended its run at the 45th Street Theatre on

Feb. 28, to a 52-city, locally-cast national tour.

The Bala Cynwyd, Penn.-based Hysterectomy Educational Resources and

Services Foundation (HERS) funded the mounting of the play, which was

written by Pittsburgh-based playwright Rich Schweikert and staged by

the playwright and Carpenter. The production coincided

with HERS's annual conference, held in New York City this year at the

Hudson Hotel.
