Guest guest
Hi I received my bill from the hospital and I have a question as to who orders the blood tests pre surgery. I saw the orders from my physician and it said, clotting tests, etc. nothing about Antibody screen, which I assume is an hiv test. but there was a $24 antibody test on my bill Maybe its for some other kind of antibody. I asked the hospital person in the billing dept when I called in to pay my co-pay. she said it was the drs. orders, but I dont recall seeing it. I thought it was illegal to do an hiv test on someone without their permission? does anybody know? I had to pay $24 for this test and I just got hiv tested as part of a life insurance increase after my adoption went thru so I wasnt happy paying this (although, minimal) fee. Just curious. maureen

Guest guest
Hi, Don't worry about an antibody screen. Its part of what we call a " type and screen " to determine your type of blood and whether it is rh- or rh+ . Its almost routinely done on admission in case you need a transfusion. I work in a Critical Care Unit and draw one on everyone I admit. Cheryl
