Following the recent pole on the heredity of fibroids and Carla's

post on Genes I would like to add some bad news that I found out only

last night relating to the above.

My sister was diagnosed with a fibroid. Over Easter she had her

period and it went on and on without showing any signs of stoping. In

total the mensturation lasted 10-13 days. She was not flooding or

anything but for her standards this was an unusually long period.

Normally her period lasts between 4-5 days. That looked ominus to me

but I said nothing at that time. She has had surgery for severe

endometriosis and feeling nervous about the whole thing she went for

an ultrasound when her period stopped. The results showed a fibroid

not very big though. But as we have learned its the location that

matters. She is 37 years old and she had the surgery for endo 31/2

years ago. I do not want to be the one baring the bad news but the

fact that her period got suddenly so long is not a good sign in my

books.

I suppose we only have to wait and see what happens next time.

It is such a shame though, because she went through a lot with the

endo and her chances of getting pregnant are not very good after

that. The doctor actually told her he could not guarantee that she

could get pregnant without help. She is not very keen on taking

hormones or been poked and proded around.

It is a hard life after all.

Hi,

I'm so sorry about hearing about your sister. Yes this could be the start of

fibroid problems for her. If she has a small fibroid in the right location, she

may only need a resection. This is a much simplier procedure. My fibroid got too

large for them to do a resection so it's important to catch them when they are

small. Watching and waiting isn't always the best thing to do, not when a

problem fibroid can be removed by a resection.

You need to encourage your sister to be tested for anemia. This is a lot of

bleeding. Slow FE (slow release) iron and vitamin C will help anemia. You can

byt this iron in a lot of places, Walmart, Kmart, Target, Sam's Club is

cheapest. Anemia can become a BIG problem real quick.

Your sister is lucky that she has you and you know about this group. She has a

lot of information and support available to her. You are a very caring sister

and want to help your sister so she's ahead in the game. She's lucky, and life

is less hard with a little help from family and friends.

I spoke to her about the various options she may have and she is

seeing the doctor on Monday. I told her to ask if he can tell her the

type of fibroid she has and where is it located. I also told her not

to be intimitated by the doctor if he starts scaring her with the

usuall stuff we all know so well.

I just hope all goes well for her and she is one of the lucky ones

with the asymptomatic fibroids.

She will also see the doctor who performed the endo surgery if things

do not go well with the doctor she is seeing on Monday. Her surgeon

specializes in reproductive issues so he should be up to date with

all options available for fibroid patients.

What she is worried about is that if she gets prolonged or heavy

periods from the fibroid this may cause new endometriosis cysts like

she had before. I think that if you are prone to endo having loads of

blood when mensturating is not that good. I am not sure though, can

anyone shed some light here?? Calling Doctor Roma!!!

I am sending her information vie email about websites and will advise

her on books to read.
