Guest guest
hi everyone, I had my myo on May 28, last friday. I have not had a chance to post since I stayed at my mother's home, because I have so many stairs in my house. I decided I did not feel like manuevering them. I am back home now and the stairs are no problem at all. Any way I will give you a brief run down of my myo: I arrived at the hospital, in NYC, before 6 am, about 6:15 I went up to get preped. I wallked in to the operating room on my own about 7:40 and got on to the operating table, where I was promptly given an IV and little boots were put on to prevent blood clots. I felt the cold anesthisia go through my arm and the next time I was aware was in recovery. My surgery was done by Dr.West and his team. My case was a little more complicated because I was on blood thinners due to my fibroids compressing my in vena cava (large vein which carries blood from the legs to the heart and back). My uterus was 25 cm and according to the MRI, I had two prominent fibroids one 17cm and the other about 11cm, and then numerous others. My surgery lasted 4 1/2 hours. I was in recovery for 4 hours. I woke up about 4pm. My surgery did not go exactly according to protocol, because they found out that I had so many fibroids, that blood loss was inevitable, even though Dr. West uses the cell saver. I was told that 40 to 50 fibroids were removed, all of varying sizes from melon to pea. Dr. West explained that each fibroid had its own blood supply and even though they were returning my own blood back to me, they could not returne the blood that the fibroid held. Thank goodness I had gotton my hemoblogbin count up to 12, because it fell substantially during surgery. The surgery was still a success, and I still have my uterus. Dr. West was trying to decide whether to tranfuse me,but not unless it was life threatening. He wanted to wait to see if my body would take care of the problem on its own. So I was watched closely while I was in recovery for the 4 hours. When I was taken to my room, I was weak, dizzy and nauseous. I was immediately hooked up to an IV and again watched closely. Evidently my blood count began to rise. I eventually was able to walk unassisted, and by the second day my nauseous had subsided and I was able to eat a liquid menu. I did not have that much pain, but I was very sore. Dr. West came to see me the next day, late, and decided I could go home on Sunday morning, 48 hours later. I will write more later. For now I think I have gone on long enough. ne, Elana, thanks so much for your well wishes, I am so glad I had my surgery with Dr. West, I don't think most surgeons would have been able to continue without changing to a hyster. I saw him Thursday for a post op and he said my incision is healing very well. I am scheuled to see him again in two weeks.
