Well, like others, today my ab myo finally got scheduled. April 29 is

looking to be a popular day in the myo world, as I know at least one

other person here is scheduled for that date.

I am scared....nervous....all of that stuff. What should I be doing

to prepare? My pre-op is scheduled for this Friday 3/26..only b/c it

is hard as heck to get in with my gyn, so I had to schedule it after

my last appointment 2 weeks ago even before my surgery was on the

books.

Should I be planning to donate my own blood? Is it ok to get a

massage before then? I was already told no anti inflam pain meds 10

days prior, which sucks b/c that will mean I'll have another painful

period right before the surgery (I come on about the 25th of every

month). How long before the surgery should I get there? Should I be

calling my insurance company, or should the doctor's office be doing

all that stuff? And how far in advance should I preregister with the

hospital?

Also, I have a quasi-affiliation with the hospital I'll be having the

surgery at (I'm a social worker with the City, and my clients are in

and out of the hospital there all the time), so do you think it would

be possible to request a private room so I would not potentially be

rooming with one of my clients, which would not be good?

I know these questions are asked again and again, so if there are old

post numbers that I can be referred to so I can read them, I'll

gladly do that. Or if anyone else has any new advice to offer, please

send it my way.

I'm very glad that the next DC Meetup is a few days before my surgery

so I'll be going in with some support close to that date.

I am happy that it's finally scheduled, but I am feeling a whole

bunch of other emotions right along with that. I feel like I'm about

to burst into tears. I will be so happy to not be in pain, but I've

never been cut before, so just the thought of that has me very

anxious. I'm also really scared of anesthesia. Even though this will

be my 3rd go-round for surgery, this is the first time I have had to

actually stay in the hospital (the other 2 were hysteroscopic/laser

procedures). Oy vey! I'm so glad this site is here...:)

Thanks ladies!

Kim

Hi,

Do what lessens stress for you. Read, listen to music, watch you favorite

movie... Tell yourself that you NEED this surgery.

My insurance had to pre-approve my surgery. So yes, I'd contact them. They may

not pay otherwise. You should not need to donate your own blood. You can inquire

if you'd like. You'll need to advoid certain herbs before surgery. They should

tell you all of this during your pre-op visit. Your insurance may not pay for a

private room. I had a " private " room. A very small room. They had a large

nurses' station with small private rooms surrounding it. Only surgical patients

were in these rooms. I went home the next day after my surgery. The room wasn't

a worry. I never used anything that I brought. I even went up stairs the day

after surgery. It's different for everyone.

You might want to ask about them putting something in your IV before surgery to

calm your stomach. You can do this the day of your surgery. They can give you

something before surgery to calm you too. They'll wheel you into the operating

room. You'll move to the operating table. They'll give you a injection and put a

mask over your face. The next thing is that you'll be waking up and it will seem

like no time has passed.

Walking is important. It will help you heal. I wouldn't eat food that might

upset your stomach before or after.

This surgery gave me my life back. It was worth it. I only wish that I would

have done it sooner.

You'll be OK and you'll feel better!

Sending you my support and prayers,

Ku

Hi Kim

Good luck with your myo on April 29th. I look forward to hearing your experience

to take with me to mine - May 17th. I've read alot on this website that the

anticipation is worse than the surgery. Just think by the summer, you'll be able

to enjoy yourself & not be at the mercy of your fibroids..that's what I keep

looking forward to!

Oy vey is right but you're on the road to your new life.

Kim,

You sound a lot like I did a few weeks ago.

My myo is this Monday and I have been doing a lot to prepare for it.

I am taking lots of vitamins, especially Vit.C to get my body ready.

I am also reading a book called " Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster " as

well as listening to the accompaning tape. It's really helping me to

relax and use visualization and has already helped me through my pre-

op exams. I asked my doctor about a massage the night before and she

said fine, as long as I drink a lot of water afterwards. I'm looking

into accupuncture too.

As for NSAIDS (Non-steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs), since that

includes Advil, Motrin, aspirin, any ibuprophen, I have found Extra

Strength Tylenol to do the trick for cramping.

Your doctor's office should be calling your insurance comapy but just

to be prepared for what you may have to pay out of pocket, I suggest

you checking with your carrier also.

Your doctor's office should call you the last business day before

surgery to tell you when to arrive.

My friend has made a calendar of who will come and stay with me, who

will bring meals, walk my dog, clean the kittyy litter box, do

dishes, etc.. It's helped to ease my mind about those things. I have

also gone out and bought a lot of " big " pants and jumpers to wear

afterwards.

I have just been asking every woman I know who has gone through this

for any advice they would give and that's how I've found out things

to help me prepare.

Good luck!
