Problem when yawning

Hi Maureen,

Ah, scary memories! This jaw-locking thing happened to me once in my

twenties, and it wasn't just for a moment! I was in a library, yawned

big, and got my jaw locked so it just wouldn't close. I recall rushing

over to a librarian, gesturing to my wide-open jaw. Don't know how I

thought she might have helped?! Anyway, a strategic manual adjustment

must have unlocked the thing and I was OK. She probably still dreams

about the terrified gaping patron (think Munch!). I still worry about

this at the dentist and when yawning. At the dentist, I presume that

they can make things right. Elsewhere, I'm just hoping grabbing the

jaw and moving it gently will help. Hope this doesn't happen to you

too often!!

Yes, Maureen, it just started happening to me about 2 weeks ago! I

haven't figured out what to do about it.

--- Maureen, I also have that once and awhile. It is scary. What I do

Is to massage the jaw and try to relax. I don't know if this is a pls

thing as my jaw would click when I was young but not lock.I always

thought that it could be related to have warn braces as a

teen.Carolyn itIn PLS-FRIENDS , " Maureen "

Hi Carolyn

I had braces as a teen too but this jaw locking bizo began about a

year ago. I do think it is related to PLS because we are weak in

almost every area of our bodies and when I yawn I must be opening my

mouth maybe wider than normal because of weakness there and therefore

the jaw almost locks. Thats what the lay doctor in me thinks :)

Hi Mollie,

Its scary isnt it! What I try to do is to hold my mouth closed when I

yawn so it doesnt open too wide, which I think is the problem. Our

jaws are weak and they open too wide. Geo told me about a condition

called TMJ. I am going to mention it to my neuro when I see him in

March but I doubt that anything can be done about it.
