Cell Saver

Hi all,

On Monday, I went to a new gyno about my fibroids and he mentioned he used a

" cell saver " . Does anyone know exactly what is a cell saver and what it does?

I was pretty happy with this doc - he answered all my questions patiently

(the ones someone recently posted here - thank you whomever that was!) He

doesn't

cut the ab muscles just moves them. When I asked about how he controls

bleeding during surgery he mentioned the tourniquet method and subsequently the

cell

saver. Is the tourniquet method, the best method? He's had two myos turn into

hysters and has given two transfusions in a 20-odd year career. He also uses

" pertussin " and I wondered as well what exactly that is.

Only problem is the hospital is a bit out of the way for me - in rush hour

would probably be a two-hour drive but I know a lot of you travel quite a bit

further than that for myos. The other thing is he mentioned that in the city I

live in there are only three gynos who perform myos on a weekly basis - I

wanted to ask him exactly who they are but felt that was a little inconsiderate

at

that point in the conversation. Now I'm thinking maybe I should phone and

ask...what does everyone think - should I find out if some of these doctors are

closer to home? I live near two major hospitals and think at least one of the

gyns might be there, maybe. I've tried calling hospital gyn floors but they

refuse to give out any information.
