Guest guest
I have just signed up for a trail of the 'Burbank Clip'. This is a non-surgical treatment for fibroids that involves cutting the blood supply to the uterus for 6 hours. The clip is inserted through the cervix and the procedure lasts 45 mnutes. After 6 hours the clip is removed and the blood supply returns to the uterus but the fibroids are not able to recover. I have multiple fibroids the largest at 10cm diameter. I was diagnosed when I got pregnant and had a vaginal delivery with no unusual bleeding. Now I would like to remove them although I remain symptom free. Has anyone heard of this technique? It was pioneered in Mexico and the trial is also underway in Florida somewhere as well as in my town London, Canada. Chantal

Guest guest
The Burbank clip, or clamp, was invented by an Interventional Radiologist, Fred Burbank, from Southern California. The clamp is designed to fit through the vagina and is applied around the cervix in order to cut off the blood flowing through the uterine arteries (the uterine arteries are at the point where the cervix meets the vagina). After 6 hours, the clamp is removed and the patient goes home. Dr. Burbank discovered that fibroids die after UAE in about 6 hours, while normal uterine muscle re-establishes normal blood supply by that time. He theorized that if he could invent something that could cut off the blood supply to the fibroids for just 6 hours, no other treatment would be necessary. Studies performed in Mexico and Canada appear very promising so far. In the US, the clamp is only approved by the FDA for use during myomectomy to decrease blood loss during surgery. I have been in contact with the company that makes the clamp and I will be using it in the near future during surgery. The eventual goal is to apply and remove the clamp in the office with, hopefully, results that are comparable to UAE. Guest guest
Dr. , isn't the working assumption about why sexual function is affected in some women following UAE because sometimes embolizing the lowest section of the uterus affects blood flow to the cervix? How would the Burbank Cliip affect the blood flow to the cervix and vagina? Guest guest
Hi Leonie, Nice to see your picture posted from the NY meet-up. As it has been explained to me, the clamp only compresses the main branch of the uterine artery. The vaginal artery comes into the vagina at a lower point. However, as UAE has taught us, different women have different blood vessel connections, so this might be a possible (but uncommon) problem. I will send your e-mail on to Fred Burbank and see what he has to say.
