Do fibroids go away at menopause?

I am new to this message board. I am 51 and have fibroids that

cause me to have very heavy periods. I am in perimenopause right

now but my periods are still fairly regular so who knows when I will

actually go through menopause. Other than the heavy bleeding and a

slightly rounded tummy, I don't have any other side effects. But

the heavy periods really do have an effect on my quality of life

because it controls how I plan my life and what I can and can't do

for 2-3 days every month.

My question is -- has anyone had fibroids shrink (quickly or slowly)

with the onset of menopause? I definitely do not want a

hysterectomy and since I may be close to menopause I would prefer to

not go through any other surgery either, if I can help it (like the

embolization surgery that I have read about on the message board

that some women have had.)-- that is, if the fibroids will shrink on

their own.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Joan

I'm 54 and quit periods last summer right after Synthroid prescription

was adjusted higher. Also, last year GYN had me on 400 mg of

Prometrium which was too much and causing high blood pressure. Had

TIA last May and soaring high blood pressure in November. Switched

GYN and new doc prescribed 100mg Prometrium and blood pressure is just

fine. Prometrium doesn't help with the HOT FLASHES. Waiting to see

in June annual checkup what fibroids are doing. Have several and 6 mo

size uterus the GYNs said. Also lost 12 pounds since January on

Atkins lo-carb diet. Keeping that weight off. I can wait on those

fibroids to go away now.
