Guest guest
I think this is the hardest decision of my life. I was diagnosed with fibroids in October 2003 ranging from 1cm to 3cm. I have four of them. I just went in today for another sonogram. I still have four. Silently hoping they were gone. Yeah right! The tech said the largest looks about the size of a quarter. My dilemma is I have tried to conceive for the past year and a half without success. I am scheduled for a myo next month. And the size of these fibroids just keep running through my mind. I just keep thinking I am getting cut to remove four tumors that are only quarter size. My sonogram report does state that the largest fibroid is distoring the uterine lining. I just can't believe something so little is keeping me from having a baby. Has anyone here ever had a myo for fibroids this small? Please let me know your experience. Did removing such small fibroids help you to conceive. I really want a baby and if removing these little things will help I will do it. I just don't want to have this surgery and it makes matters worse. HELP! Dani
Guest guest
Hi Dani, I am guessing you've investigated all other possible reasons that you might no be able to conceive, and are seeing an infertility specialist who recommended myo? > I think this is the hardest decision of my life. Guest guest
I've only seen my OB/GYN doctor. Haven't found any other reason for the infertility. I don't know. I am just so confused. > I am guessing you've investigated all other possible reasons that > you might no be able to conceive, and are seeing an infertility > specialist who recommended myo? Guest guest
Hi, A small fibroid in the " wrong " place can cause big problems. Fibroids get worse, not better. If a fibroid is distorting your uterus, it can stop you from getting preggie. Also think that if you were able to conceive, the fibroids will grow and can interfere with having a healthy baby. Many women with fibroids have healthy babies. It's location, location. location. Recently a woman wrote saying she lost her baby because of fibroids. She not the first on this list to do so. We've also heard from women who've removed their fibroids and have went to have a baby. If you feel you need a second opinion, get one. Feel good about this decision. Also note, pregnancy is not easy for any woman. It has it's own trials and you can end up with surgery (c-section). But you get a baby. It might be that you need this surgery and you'll have a baby because of it. You'll make a family. Is it worth this chance? Guest guest
Hi Dani, Have you checked other factors re your fertility? How about your hormones, sperm analysis for your partner, your tubes(HSG). I wouldnt even get a myo with fibroids that small ..its not worth it..The scarring may make things even worse..or more difficult for you to become preggie.. How old are you? I would only get it removed if your RE has determined this is the only reason you are not getting pregnant, other wise continue to try and get pregnant..you never know.. I had 2 fibroids remved last year Sept/2004, one was around 9 and the other 7 cm, one was blocking the entrance of my left tube.. On Friday i go and get a HSG to check my tubes and uterus.. Wish me luck!
Guest guest
you need to get referred to an RE. I can guarantee ths is not the reason alone for not becoming pregnant..you have to look @ all factors..the fibroids could be the least of your worries eventsbydanielle eventsbydanielle@...> wrote: I've only seen my OB/GYN doctor. Guest guest
Hi all! I had a hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and a mini laparotomy(myo) for many small fibroids and one large 3cm (not very large compared to others on the board) just a week and a half ago. I lost my son at 21 weeks due to fibroids. The ob/gyns who saw me in the emergency room really put a scare in me saying I had so many fibroids and that I may not be able to conceive. I took it into my own hands to research and found (FROM THIS WONDERFUL BOARD) that I should see an RE. I went to a RE who was very informed. His sole purpose for the operation was to allow me to carry a child to full term. I would recommend (if possible) finding a RE and have them do a thorough check up. It appears that all is well. I went to see the Dr. last week and will see him again next week. I would also recommend maybe reading some of the posts on the TTCMyomectomy board. Others might be able to help...I know that there are more of us out there trying to get PG : ) Best of luck to you! Please feel free to email with any questions. My dilemma is I have tried to conceive for the past year and a half without success. I am scheduled for a myo next month. I just can't believe something so little is keeping me from having a baby. Guest guest
No, we didn't check hormones or sperm because I got pregnant last summer but miscarried. We think it is the fibroid that is displacing my endometrial lining that caused the baby not to implant properly. I really like my doctor. With the surgery scheduled for next month, I don't know if I should try another doctor. I have been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half and we haven't found anything wrong but these stupid fibroids. I am 27. I find such conflicting information. Some say have the surgery, some say don't. Then I find this article online, which makes me think I need to get these things out. I have heard too many stories of people with small fibroids that quadrupled during pregnancy and they lose their babies due to preterm labor. I am terrified of that! Then I do think about the scarring, but then I think about all of the women who have had three and four C sections and conceive just fine. I just don't know!!! You are damned if you do, damned if you don't. But I only have a few weeks to decide. Article I found online about small fibroids: Newswise — Early results from a pioneering study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill indicate that small uterine fibroids are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Fibroids, benign muscle tumors of the uterus, are estimated to affect more than one in five women of reproductive age. But little is known about the influence of these growths on pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage, premature birth and fetal growth restriction. " No studies have prospectively investigated these risks in a large cohort of women early in pregnancy where presence of fibroids was uniformly assessed using ultrasound imaging. This is the first large- scale prospective study to do that, " said Dr. Hartmann, the study's principal investigator. Hartmann also is assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology as well as epidemiology in UNC's schools of medicine and public health. read the rest here: http://www.newswise.com/p/articles/view/504229/
Guest guest
One miscarriage could mean any number of things or it might just be a fluke. The fact that you aren't easily getting pregnant points out that something is going on, provided you are having well-timed intercourse. Still before you undergo myo you really should do less invasive evaluations of you and your partner's fertility. What if you partner doesn't have a great sperm count and you don't find out until after your surgery? As for this study, I'm not discounting it but I would like to point out that they are only observing the fibroids and that fibroids don't appear to happen in a vacuum. What would be more useful is to know if they had any hormonal issues in their early pregnancy AND had fibroids. I think of it as a chicken and egg kind of thing -- which came first the fibroid or the hormonal problem? Note as well that this article says that " little is known " -- one more study just adds to the pool of information to draw on. There are lots of women who have successful pregnancies with fibroids -- they tend to be ones without symptomatic fibroids and therefore aren't looking for support and don't hang out in our forum. I know of two women in town who both fit into this category. --Ann > > Article I found online about small fibroids: > > Newswise — Early results from a pioneering study at the University > of North Carolina at Chapel Hill indicate that small uterine > fibroids are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. > > Fibroids, benign muscle tumors of the uterus, are estimated to > affect more than one in five women of reproductive age. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. I called a fertility center here in my area. They can see me tomorrow. They asked my doctor's name, and said she was awesome and referred other patients there before. That made me feel great. I really have lots of confidence in my doctor. I have only had rave reviews of her. I am still happy I am going in for this appt though. They can also give my husband a semen analysis. I can't wait to see what they have to say. Thanks Dani
