Guest guest
Hi, I can only say from experience trust your doctor. Although many women with fibroids have healthy full term pregnancies some do not. I was told back in 2000 I had a fibroid. In 2002, I went to this same doctor and talked to her about my husband and I wanting to start a family. She told me to take vitamins and if I don't conceive within a year to come back and then we will have to talk about removing the fibroid. Well, I conceived within 3mos. Then switched doctors to deliver at a nearby hospital. The new doctor on the first exam said I have to consider you high risk because you have a fibroid. He said I need to watch you, baby and fibroid very carefully. I was shocked no one ever told me there could be complications. Well, I ended up having a horrible pregnancy. I cramped the entire time. In August of 2002 on my birthday I remember like it was yesterday I could barely move and felt lots of pressure between my legs. I was 23 weeks pregnant. I went to the ER they said the fibroid is breaking down and it's going to be painful. That was on a Sunday. By Wednesady I called my doctor and said I need to see you I can barely move there has to be something you can give me that won't harm my baby. So we made an appt. to meet on Friday when my regular scheduled appt. was that Monday. I get to his office and he says " UH OH " then goes out to his nurse says call her husband ASAP, get me a wheel chair. His office is connected to the hospital. He then wheels me to the hospital for an ultrasound to find out I'm completely dilated. The baby was pushing on the fibroid, the fibroid was growing and pushing on my cervix. Friday, at noon I went on bedrest literally positioned with my feet above my head to keep all weight off the pelvis. He wanted to keep the baby in as long as he could. I was allowed to sit up 15min a day and had to stay on a liquid diet. This lasted until Sunday night 24weeks pregnant I started cramping again. This time he gave me something to relax my uterus and I was able to sleep a few hours. When I woke up it was worse. At that time I passed a huge blood clot and then was rushed iin for an emergency c-section. My daughter was born at 24 weeks weighing 1lb 7oz 13 inches long. She fought long and hard to stay with us. She was on a ventilator for 7 weeks and nasal oxygen for 5 more weeks. She spent 99 days in the Neonatal intensive care unit. When she came home she had to go right back in for surgery after surgery because of something common in preemies ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). My daughter is permanently blind. She also after coming home experienced some eating problems and at 18.5mos old she eats from a feeding tube. We have therapies 5 days a week, GI doctor appts, Pediatrician appts. for weight checks and eye doctor appts. to make sure her eyes don't have infection or other problems she can't tell us about. She is 18.5mos and functions at an 11 month old. She can crawl usually in a circle and is learning to stand, but will not even think about moving her legs while standing. The only word she says is dada and has no idea what it means. They tell me there is a great risk she will be labeled mentally retarded once she starts school. I love my daughter to death, but if someone would have told me there was a possibility of this you better believe I would have had surgery to eliminate any risk. No one wants to see their child suffer that much and fight that hard to survive. My husband and I are meeting with out doctor on Friday to discuss taking my fibroid out so we can try and have a healthy baby so will have a sibling. I wanted to share my story so that you knew it does happen and it can be devastation. I hope and pray everyday that no other mother goes through what I did and I hope no other parent has to hear the words " your child is blind " . Good Luck with your decision and sorry this was so long there was just a lot of things I wanted to share with you. Guest guest
thanks pam for sharing your story I had a miscarriage and was told by my doctor that i shouldnt try again until the fibroids are removed. At first i thought that maybe she was overreacting since many women on here had healthy babies without one but now I know that there are real risks that I should consider and that helps my peace of mind so much Thanks again!! Guest guest
Thankyou so much for sharing that. I'm still in shock really about he potential problems of fibroids. I've recently moved from the UK to the states and over there they seemed to think theres no problem with fibroids and kind of told me just to keep trying to conceive. I am thankful I have moved to a country which takes these things more seriously and is more willing to help. The UK doctors told me I would have to have a couple of miscarraiges before they would take it seriously and treat the fibroids. Unbelievable! I had a HSG scan today and all the tubes are fine but I could see the big fibroid on the screen sticking out - very weird. Doctor said there was only that one inside the uterus the other 2 must be outside but he says the big one definately needs removing. Guest guest
---Caron..i just thought I would tell you that I also have a large fibroid inside my uterus that is measuring 8.6cm (mid-January) My ob- gyn and also the RE that he referred me to have both stated that I should have it removed before ttc. I have my myo scheduled for April 22nd as I am wanting to try to have children within the next year or two. They are concerned with me carrying a child to term or even the possibility of not being able to conceive if I leave it. Hope that helps. Guest guest
My largest was 3cm before getting pregnant, but my Dr. said not to worry. Then it grew to 6 in less than 8 weeks after I got pregnant. I had a miscarriage at 9weeks, and my Dr. is now saying I 'may' want to look into having them removed before trying again, but won't say anything definitive either way. I have a couple of months to decide, and am trying to gather as much info as I can now. I am really worried about getting the surgery though. Guest guest
I discovered mine last year, and my doctor told me that it was the size of my index finger. I now discovered that it has grown a bit more. Now my visit to another doctor and I have been advised to do surgery. I am trying some herbal treatment first and will check to see the results before I decide on surgery. Because I really need a next child. I only have one. juice01111 juice00000@...> wrote: My largest was 3cm before getting pregnant, but my Dr. said not to worry. Then it grew to 6 in less than 8 weeks after I got pregnant.
