endometrial ablation on Monday

It is so wonderful to be able to share, listen and discuss such

personal experiences with such supportive woman and professionals. I

have been a member on this site for many months now.

My personal experience: diagnosed with multiple fibroids 14 months

ago after experiencing excrutiating pain during menses and huge,

heavy periods, put on B/C pill for 10 months and continued to bleed

even after advice from doctor to take up to 4 pills a day to stop the

bleeding. Six months ago after another ultrasound, my fibroids have

grown (uterus is like a 5 month preg.) New gyno - took me off the

estrogen and put me on danazol. (yuck) But the bleeding has stopped.

My ablation is on Monday (23rd). I am also having a hysteroscopy. I

am a little scared..not sure if I am doing the right procedure. I

know that my fibroids will not be taken out....am I doing the right

thing?? Has anyone else had the ablation procedure and lived pain

free with their fibroids intact? (I'm 46, with two grown children)

Thanks for listening,

Sherry

Hi,

Did they do a MRI and check for large fibroids in your uterus? Ablation isn't

supose to be done as a treatment for bleeding because of these fibroids. I've

read this several times. I had such a fibroid and could not have ablation to

treat my bleeding. I have read that they can sometimes remove smaller fibroids

at the same time as ablation. You might want to ask your doctor.

After the diagnosis has been made, by sampling the uterine lining and looking

into the uterine cavity with a telescope (hysteroscopy), the patient can choose

a number of potential therapies depending upon the diagnosis. If there is no

overgrowth of the lining (hyperplasia) and no evidence of large fibroids in the

uterus causing the bleeding, then one method of treatment may be endometrial

ablation. Of course medical treatment should first be tried but if these efforts

fail to correct the problem and if pain is not a significant part of the

patients symptoms then ablation can be performed.

Hi Sherry,

I had an ablation in October after a couple of months of continual

bleeding. The ablation was easy. However, it didn't stop my periods.

In fact, they are getting progressively heavier. The last one

resulted in 12 hours of heavy bleeding, but no clots. I am now on

Depo Provera and am scheduled for a hysteroscopy on March 5.

I don't think an ablation is the answer if the fibroid is still

there. It is a matter of trying to deal with the symptom and not with

the problem. I am almost 49 and my gyn and I are trying to buy me

time so that I could get to menopause.

HI Ku,

thanks for your reply. No I did not have an MRI only ultra sounds

that showed multiple fibroids in the uterine muscle. They had grown

from last year including one large one in posterior. I am having a

hysteroscopy at the same time as the ablation and because I will be

under general anesthtic, I won't be able to discuss anything with my

doc until after the procedure. I hope this works. I don't ever want

to go through the pain and heavy bleeding like I have had these past

few years. thanks again for your reply.

Hi nne,

Thanks for replying. I'm sorry the ablation didn't work for you. I

have no idea if it is going to work for me either since I have so

many fibroids, and they aren't small ones either. I hope things go

smoothly. I really can't continue with the pain and bleeding that I

have experienced this past year - two years. I just wasn't sure if it

was time for me to have a hysterctomy because that is next on the

list for me.

Good luck on your hysteroscopy.

Sherry,

I had considered a ablation but my gyn told me that I wasn't a

candidate because I did have multiple fibroids. The ablation will not

get rid of the fibroids and may not relieve your symptoms. I also

tried the " pill " and was taking 3 a day and this did not stop the

heavy bleeding and clots. The ablation will destroy the uterine

lining while not touching the fibroids. In order for the ablation to

work the inside of the uterus has to be pretty normal in shape also.

I had a UAE and the bleeding and bulk symptoms are now gone. If you

are still unsure if you are choosing the right procedure can you have

a second opinion? If so I would recommend it so that you can be sure

of the decision you are making.

Take care and best wishes

Carmon

Instead of hysterectomy being " next on your list " how about UAE or

myomectomy, or even hysteroscopic resection?
