Guest guest
Marsha, everything is open for discussion here.....its been talked about before. If I were you I'd go see a urologist to get a better picture of what is happening. A lot of us use bladder control medication for our bladder urgencies. Yes it means another pill unforunately, I'm on detrol LA and it helps. I still wear protection when I know I'm going out for a long time tho. I have a lot of bladder infection and have had kidney stones. Don't wish that on anyone!! Gosh they hurt..............................Flora
Guest guest
kidney stones OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fortunately i only exp the urgencies occasionally. the leaks/dribbling drive me nuts. go potty. wipe, stand up and dribble. or just stand up after sitting, not needing to go potty but leak. grrrrrr have you found any pads that work yet are more comfortable to wear? at this point I don't need something for heavy lose, so have tried brands for bladder issues, tried brands for menstural issues but just hate how they feel. ones with wings at least tend to stay in place better than ones without. but still even with wings they bunch up, so uncomfortable. i had a hysterectomy in 2001 and was so glad i didn't need pads ever again. grrrr now few years later back to some kind of pads at times. hope you don't have more kidney stones or bladder infections. neither are fun. take care of you marfla Be Blessed Re: bladder? > Marsha, everything is open for discussion here.....its been talked about > before. Guest guest
Marsha I've learned so much about bladder issues in neurological patients so let me share. If your spasticity is increasing, the bladder being a special type of muscle will spasm upon changing torso position and can overpower the valve (sphinter) at the base of the bladder. This can occur even if you just left the bathroom 15 min. earlier. Urispas is the best drug for this but some also use Detrol or ditropan. If you are taking too much muscle relaxant then the valve or sphinter gets floppy which is also a common problem in otherwise healthy females. Readjusting the relaxant or countering the problem with Detrol or ditropan will work if the valve hasn't become infected. When the bladder sphinter becomes weak and floppy it exposes the inside of the bladder and itself to bacteria. The sphinter can become inflamed and weaker in the process. Bladder infections cause worsening of neuro symptoms with more spasticity and worse balance problems. Even recoevering stroke patients fall more due to bladder infections. So a doctor needs to run a urinalysis and urine culture before deciding which direction to take. There is also an exercise to strengthen the sphinter that the doc can clue you in on if needed. Hope that helps Eva
Guest guest
Thanks Eva I know I need to stress this issue more to my docs. I do mention it but do so as in a fly by manner. As I really don't want to see a urologists. Knowing the type test they do, not sure I can handle. So I have informed docs of the problem but honestly I probably have played it down so not to bring too much attention. its so embarrassing though to experience this esp when out and about, but for me embarrassing to discuss, plus fear/concern of being referred to urologist. I know get over it LOL. I am sure I will get over that feeling when I have had enough of dealing with it best way I know how. Again thanks, and gentle hugs marfla Be Blessed Re: bladder? > Marsha I've learned so much about bladder issues in neurological > patients so let me share. > If your spasticity is increasing, the bladder being a special type of > muscle will spasm upon changing torso position and can overpower the > valve (sphinter) at the base of the bladder. Guest guest
I too take Detrol LA. I have also using a catheter. I find that it gives me more freedom. Allows me to go out for about 4 hours with out using the bathroom. Instead on getting up every hour at night. I may only get up about 3 times a night. It stops wetting accidents. My urologist wanted me to try it a few years ago. As I was working I wouldn't consider it. Now it helps. What I do is go the usual way then use the catheter and it completely empties the bladder.
