for brain health and is recommended for neuro

patients], but not this one. what is the benefit

Been using it for about 7 years after reading about its properties

(especially useful for MS apparently) on Steve Shackel's website and

other places. It is one of the half dozen or more things I started back

then which have basically stopped my progression. Is it one of the ones

that is helping? No idea but something is! :-)

Hi Sara

> Alpha Lipoic Acid is a Antioxident .To understand what

antioxident is . Take an apple out of the frig and slice it into

small slices ,now leave some out on the counter and put some in a

sealed baggy and put back in the frig ,The next day look at the ones

on the counter ,They are problably brown and limp ,the ones in the

baggy are nice and crisp . this is what happens to cells in our

bodies called Oxidative Stress .Oxygen which is essential to life is

killing our cells . which in turn affects our health .The

Mitochondia are destroyed . www.agelessrx.com read about it . Im

game for anything pretty much . If we dont take charge of our health

we cant expect anyone else to . although it does make Urine smell

bad ,dont know why ? GEO

thanks geo. do you get yours at a health food store or order it

online? i read some more about it like you suggested and it seems

worth trying.

thanks again for additional info.

hi gary,

hope i'm not being too nosey but what other supplements are you

taking? i've been doing lots of reading in an attempt to figure out

which ones besides fish oil, multi vitamin, and, as you and geo

mentioned, alpha linoic acid, would be most beneficial for people

w/PLS. so i am very interested to find out what other folks are

doing in this area.

the nutritionist at the neuro clinic where i go is really nice and

gave me a terrific suggestion about how to get more protein in (she

said to double my intake of protein, whic h has helped my energy

level a lot and kept me from losing any more weight) but doesn't

seem to be that knowledgeable about supplements. i'm w/geo; i'm game

to try things. though i have NO plans of turning in my baclofen, as

one of my " crunchier " friends suggested. that's easy to say when you

don't have to worry about being so stiff your legs won't move and

you wipe out !!! (just a little gallows humor;-)

hey geo,

sorry to be thick--what is LDN? my prescription meds are baclofen

for spasticity and zoloft for depression; then the fish oil for the

essential fatty acids, whicch are supposedly good for brain health,

the multivitamin, and extra cal/mag/zinc to help w/muscle cramps.

then do protein shakes and am going to look into john b's suggestion

re:getting ensure (thanks for that, john).

Hi ,

No problem at all. I have been taking much the same for probably about

8 years now, though initially only one tablet/capsule of most per day

but at one time I got a double delivery so started on two of a number of

them and have kept it up since then (probably 4 years now). However,

even the single dose of most caused my progression to stop within about

6 months of starting on them all, so my progression has been effectively

halted (or very, very slow now) for about 7.5 years after I went

downhill rapidly for the first 5 years.

What I take is:

NAC (n-acetyl-cysteine) 2 x 500mg

alpha lipoic acid 2 x 100mg

CoQ10 2 x 30mg

Vit E (mixed tocopherol - apparently better for us than just the normal

d-alpha form) 2 x 1000 IU

Vit C & E with grape seed extract 1 x ?? (local product)

Vit B 1 multi-B tablet

Fish oil/EPA 2 x 1000mg for 3 years or so regularly (took from time to

time before that).

I also take 4 Liv-Pro (St 's thistle) tablets as a liver cleanser as

some things I read implicated the liver in PLS/ALS - figured it can't

hurt to take it. The particular ones I take are a local product but St

's thistle products are available everywhere. Every month or two I

used to have a Vit B12 injection (my wife learnt how to give them to me

- simple) but now I just take a sublingual (under the tongue) B12

dissolvable tablet every few weeks or month. My approach has always

been to use a variety of antioxidants (hopefully) working

synergistically together rather than putting my faith in mega doses of

just one or two. Seems to be working......... :-)

thanks gary!!! this is very helpful. i was always very

adamant about taking multi w/iron, vit B, vit E, vit C

before i started having symptoms. then i got

completely freaked out and stopped taking everything.

once i started taking my multi again and doing the

extra protein i've definitely had more energy, and

just started the fish oil in nov. after reading lots

about it. anyway, thanks again for all the

information.

Just remember when you double your protein intake you need to increase your

water intake so you don't put too much strain on your kidneys. Danny
