Second Opinions do work

Hi,

Last November I wrote asking for advice. I want to thank all the

women who encouraged me (and others) to get a second opinion if you

are not comfortable with the course of treatment recommended by your

doctor.

I would like to share my lastest experiences. I was originally

diagnosed with a 22cm fibroid in April 03. After 5 injections of

Lupron, and no positive results, I was ready to find another doctor.

At my Dec appt I was told my doctor was retiring and a new, younger

doctor was entering the practice. Perfect, I thought. That was the

second opinion I was hoping to get.

I did try to do my homework and researched the new doctor's

background prior to my appt. It seemed that she should be trained in

the various treatments for fibroids. While doing my research, I

discovered that St. Louis has a Fibroid Center affiliated with

Washington University Medical School. I couldn't have been more

disappointed when I met with the doctor in Jan. Not two minutes in

the room and she is telling me to schedule a surgery date for a

hysterectomy.

I couldn't leave quick enough to start my search for another doctor.

During the next month it took me to get an appt, I had my doubts. The

fibroid has continued to grow. It is now about 27cm long and 20cm

wide. The pain at night is difficult as it lays on my other organs. I

am ready to get this out, no matter what method is used. I can't tell

you how happy I am to have been told by a doctor just two weeks ago

that a myomectomy is possible to remove my fibroid. Probably the most

surprising part is how quickly this doctor is ready to react. I have

surgery scheduled for March 16th.

I am sure the next week is going to be a complete whirlwind. I have

never had any medical problems previously. I am nervous and a little

scared. However, I have a wonderful support system of family and

friends and know I will okay.

Thanks to everyone for your encouraging words! Great Advice!

Michele,

It sounds like you're in St. Louis. Would you mind telling us what doctor you

are seeing that is willing to do the mymomectomy?

Thanks,

Kathy

My doctor is Dr. Dean with Womens' Healthpartners. She is

located in Richmond Heights, near the St. Louis Galleria. Her number

is . Both she and her partner Dr. Ewing perform

Thanks Michele - I'll be anxious to hear how your surgery goes.

Since I'm looking for a new Gyn right now, I'll do a little more research on Dr.

Dean.
