Hi everybody,

In a last ditch effort I saw a doctor who is affiliated with my HMO.

She told me that if she did my hysteroscopic resection there would be

no guarantees that the resection would work and she may end up needing

to do a hysterectomy. She said any surgical procedure is a risk and

you never can predict the outcome. My GHP insurance would pay the

doctor and hospital charges for her. She wondered how Dr. Glassner of

Bryn Mawr could be so confident in his abilities.

In the meantime, I saw Dr. Glassner on May 3rd. He said he could

definately do the resections and was not apprehensive about my

outcome. (1 have 2-2 cm submucosal fibroids, 1 subserosal pressing

into my uterus_. He would do resections on the 3 fibroids.

I took out a loan to pay for him to do the surgery-scheduled for June 15.

I am 45 yrs. old. 0 children. Desire to have children (never give up

hope). I am divorced. I am dating.

My questions are:

1). I was on Lupron for 6 months that shrunk my fibroids nicely.

Had side effects. Tired, muscle weakness and joint stiffness.

2). I am now on Megace (daily pill, 20 mg.) to control the bleeding.

It is working nicely and I have not bled much since on it for 2

weeks.

3). Should I keep taking the Megace to keep things at bay? I am

scared that between doctors there is such as difference of opinion

about my outcome if I have surgery. Should I postpone surgery, think

about it for another month or so and then decide to have Dr/. Glassner

do the surgery?

4). The way I am thinking about it today, is that as long as I am not

having surgery, I still get to keep my uterus.

5). Should I not have surgery and cost into Menapause with these

fibroids? There only 2 cm in size (1 inch) and I don't believe they

are going to get much bigger, because of my age (45). Not likely to

grow huge at this point in my life.

This whole doctor thing just boggles my mind. Any advice would be

appreciated. I'm scared about surgery......terribly......and I live

alone. I talk to some of my friends about my health problem, but you

know how it goes, if you aren't going thru it it is hard to know what

to say.

Thanks everybody!

Jeannne

Hi Jeanne,

All I can tell you is my experience with a hysteroscopic

resection. It was for a 2 cm. submucosal fibroid. It went very

smoothly. My Dr. shaved it down and I've had no problems since. I

know part of it is still there from an ultasound I had but its not

causing any problems, bleeding etc. She never mentioned the

possibility of a Hyst and I wouldn't have given consent for it

anyway. Maybe she just wants to cover all bases? Did you ask her how

often her hysteroscopic resections turn into a hyst? Under what

circumstances? And what during yours would cause her to proceed with

a Hyst? Cheryl

You can't have a resection for a subserosal fibroid. Only fibroids

inside the uterine cavity (submucousal) can be removed this way. I

had a resection for a very small fibroid and would do it again. The

surgery and recovery was very easy for me. I was out shopping the

next day (the day I took off of work to " recover " ). If you are

having bleeding problems they will most likely not improve so long as

you have submucousal fibroids, and it is probably best not to take

the chance that they will grow too large to be resected and require

an abdominal myomectomy instead. I also understand that submucousal

fibroids are more likely to interfere with a pregnancy.
