Hi

I am 36, and got pregnant for the first time in August. At 9 weeks,

it

was discovered via US that I had a BU (at least that was the

thought).

No one seemed overly concerned, except that my risk for preterm

delivery was high.

I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks. No symptoms, it was discovered via

US (the day after I had a CVS by a MFM). The MFM didn't have much to

say about it either.

Now that I have miscarried, I have to see a fertility specialist to

get

a closer look at the uterus, and determine if it is really a BU or a

septate.

Maybe someone can help me with these questions:

1) What type of test is best to determine BU vs. Septum? A

hysterosalpingogram was mentioned to me, but I have read MRI is

better.

2) I got no feedback about my baby's location in the uterus, other

than

it was on the right side. Has anyone been told where their baby's

position was in relation to their septum/indent (ie, in a good spot

vs

a bad spot)? Neither my OB or MFM had any comment as to whether the

baby was in a good spot.

Thanks, any comments to this stressed out person would be appreciated.

Hi ,

I am so sorry for your loss, it also scares me to

death, as I am 14 weeks pregnant right now.

Did you have a 3D ultrasound at 9 weeks, or just 2D?

They thought I had a BU until I had a 3D u/s at 10

weeks, then they concluded that it was septated. My

doc is pretty sure it is complete, but can't be sure

without having done an MRI on it. He never mentioned

another test. He doesn't seem overly concerned either,

just warned me about preterm labour and the baby maybe

being breech. I asked him about incompetant cervix and

he just said we will do another u/s at 18 and 24 weeks

to watch for that. ??

I don't know either if my baby is in a " good " spot, I

asked at my u/s at 12 weeks, and the tech just said

they will look for that at 18 weeks, I am just doing

the integrated preterm screening test now. Why can't

they tell at 12 weeks? or 14? the placenta is attached

now.

I hope we both find some answers.

Hi Sherry

I had a regular US at 9 weeks, due to my OB having

trouble hearing a heartbeat. She just wanted to make

sure that everything was okay. During this routine US,

it was discovered that something with my utereus

didn't look right.

I am not sure why they can't tell you anything about

the baby being in a " good " or " bad " spot. I found

that strange also. I would think as long as it was not

near the septum, it would be okay.

I actually work at a hospital, and I spoke to a MFM I

know when mine was first diagnosed. He told me that I

was probably past the window of miscarriage from this

BU or SU at that point.

So, I tend to think my m/c was from some developmental

problem with the baby. However, I do know the

chromosomes were okay due to the CVS I had done. Who

knows--

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Keep pressing

for information and close monitoring with your

doctors. It is stressful enough trying to have a baby

at this age, let alone having this diagnosis given to

you too!

Take care,

Hi ,

Thanks for the info and your good wishes. I just wish

I could get some straight information.

There are so many conflicting reports about m/c and

incompt cervix with SU, I don't know what to do. I

don't know how closely I should be monitored or if my

doc is doing enough.

What care shoud I be getting?

Thanks,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. This is a

difficult time for sure. As for your questions, maybe

my story can help a little with that. I too was

diagnosed first as having a BU in my first pregnancy

in 7/04. We waited almost a year before trying again

and saw several doctors. All said BU. Our second

pregnancy was moving along nicely until suddenly at 12

weeks and 2 days I began to bleed. We had an

ultrasound done in the ER and the baby was still alive

and kicking. 10 minutes later, I had a miscarriage.

Like you, no one wants to tell you much. As much as I

could figure, it was on the outer right horn, which

should have been a good spot. I also am homozygous

MTHFR, which is a blood clotting disorder, so I formed

very large clots in the uterus during pregnancy. I was

told at the time that it was due to the BU until my

current RE did tests to find out otherwise.

More doctors... more BU... nothing we can do. Finally,

I sought out a reputable RE. He did my first

non-pregnant ultrasound and said... SU. Just to be

sure, he sent me for an HSG. Due to the size of my

septum, it was inconclusive. At that point, he skipped

the MRI and went for laparascopy/hysteroscopy. He had

just had a patient who was diagnosed BU from the MRI

and he found that she was SU, so in my case he didn't

want to waste that time. Anyway, he was right, it was

SU and during the surgery he removed as much as he

could from the septum. I'll be in for a second surgery

this month to trim more off of it. He told me that it

is the only absolutely conclusive way. Maybe many have

had success with the MRI, but he didn't have as much

faith in it as he used to. Discuss it with your doctor

and see what they say. Just be ready to seek as many

opinions as needed. If we hadn't, we'd have followed

the advice to just get pregant again and go on bedrest

at 8 weeks with a cerclage.

Hope this helps.

Hi Sherry

I agree- there are definintely many conflicting

reports about it all. Maybe you should be followed by

high risk OB (I think you said you were still seeing

your regular OB)? At least that way you would get

more frequent ultrasounds to help ease your mind. My

OB basically had the same thoughts as yours (US at 18

wk, possible preterm, etc) I would think a high risk

would have more experience with this.

However, after doing my own research, and reading all

of these emails, I have to wonder if there are any

concrete answers.

I am sure it will be nerve wracking for you, but try

to stay positive. You will hopefully be one of the

lucky ones without any issues at all. They do exist!

Take care,

Thanks ,

I made a call into my OB this morning, he was not in

the office, but hopefully he will call me back

tomorrow. I have a few questions for him regarding my

treatment, including whether I should be followed by a

high risk OB. I also want to ask him about the

placenta location, and if they can tell anything from

my 12 week u/s.

Thanks for your good vibes,

Sherry

Sherry
