kidney damage and fibroids

Dear all,

I have been told by my consultant that I have large fibroids. My uterus size is

equivalent to a 24 week pregnancy, though no heavy bleeding. The main concern is

that I have bilateral kidney damage (hydronephrosis). The consultant says the

neck of both kidneys are inflamed due to pressure from the fibroids. He

recommends that I have a myo after taking Zolodex for 3 months to shrink the

fibroids. I'm not keen on hormone treatment, but that is preferable to the

alternative of a hyst. He is willing to refer for a UAE but says that the myo

would better, as the fibroids putting pressure on the kidneys need removing. I

wondered if anyone had a similar experience or could offer any further

insight/advice/encouragement. Like most people the thought of surgery, and

possible complications like adhesions, doesn't thrill me. But at the same time

I'm getting fed up of lugging these fibroids around.

So any feedback would be really appreciated.

peace and blessings to everyone!

Ione,

Why is your doctor not recommending a myomectomy?

I had a 10cm fibroid as well as 5 smaller ones removed last month. I

too had hydronephrosis due to the huge fibroid. My doctor was quite

willing to perform a myo instead of a hysto. I would get a 2nd

opinion if I were you. My follow-up renal ultrasound gave my kidneys

a clean bill of health! Quite honestly, it's too soon to tell if I

notice a difference since I'm still recovering from the surgery.

I hope that helps.

hi samantha,

I wish you a very quick recovery.

what were your symptoms? I mean was your myo done because a doctor found about

hydronephrosis? I have a 10 cm intramural, too. but still considering surgery

since I dont have severe complaints. but also am scared of its damage to other

organs such as kidneys. how old are you? what did your doctor tell you abour

fertility?

thansk in advance.....

Hi Sam,

Thanks for responding. The Doctor is willing to do the Myo. I think I was

wondering whether to have the Zolodex followed by the Myo, or the UAE, and

trying to weigh it up. I don't like the sound of the hormone treatment is my

problem. If it wasn't for fear about the kidney damage I would probably feel

more comfortable about opting for the UAE. Glad to hear you got a clean bill of

health for your kidneys after the operation. That's really good news.

Take Care
