Hi, Ann:

Couldn't your pain around ovulation be what's known as " Mittelschmerz "

(German word for middle pain), normal midcycle pain, which can occur with --or

more

commonly WITHOUT-- bleeding?

Sure sounds like a convincing explanation for the pain you described.

BTW, you don't have to have fibroids--(or even be German) to have

mittelschmerz. But you DO have to be ovulating for this pain phenomenon to

occur.

Here's some more info. on the subject.

So,

When I first went to the doctor complaining about pelvic pain in Sept

2002 it was right around when I was due to ovulate. I was in a soccer

game the night before and was quite uncomfortable in my lower pelvis

and I was aware of my uterus and ovaries like one is when having a

pelvis exam.

I have these jabbing pains, fairly localized, which one doc told me

corresponded to the upper right quadrant of my uterus (my uterus was

kind of wrapped around the fibroid to the right a bit and that area

she felt was just feeling the stress periodically). She thought it

had to do with prostaglandins causing contractions. The pattern is

for this to happen prior to ovulation.

I don't have ovulatory pain episodes every cycle, actually things

have been pretty good this year since I've been doing acupuncture.

Also I don't usually use ovulation predictor tests as they are

expensive but I've been wanting to see if there is any discrepancy

between my charting my bio signs and my ovulation.

I used 3 ovulation predictor tests in the past 24 hours -- first =

negative, second = faint positive, third = positive. Last night the

pelvic pain was really irritating but this morning it is gone. I know

that my estrogen level drops at ovulation, and progesterone rises

ever so slightly and that might be the cause but the synchronicity

with my LH surge is really odd.

So, what is causing the pain?

I get " mittelschmerz " when I ovulate. Not every month, but more

months than not. I remember the first time I felt this pain. It

was when I went off birth control pills and ovulated for the first

time in years. I thought I had a bladder infection, that's how much

pain I had. I went to the doctor, but checked out ok. When I got

the same pain the next month I did some reading and figured it out.

The thing is that I didn't have this, or at least nothing so painful,

until my fibroid was fairly large. I thought I was having lower GI

issues about 6 months before my fibroid was detected and it took a

while until I realized the pattern around ovulation.

I have had several ultrasounds due to this pain but they all

indicated that I ovulated on the left and not the right side where

the pain is.

It feels hot, sore, inflamed -- right close to where my fibroid is. I

actually had to visit a doc about similar pain which I thought was

apendicitis back in 1995 but there was nothing found.

I'm thinking that there has gotta be something else that can cause

pain related to ovulation hormones.
