Guest guest
Hello , I also had a bad ultrasound appt. well not as hectic as yours, but I was unable to get my ultra sound, and after drinking all that dang water, for nothing really makes me feel this isnt even worth it... as I said before I have not resceduled. I even think of taking a drink and I am in that bathroom peeing!!! I hate it, that and headaches (mygrains) are really my only symptoms, so I really dont see the urgency in getting another appt. Thanks for the story,
Guest guest
, When it rains it pours doesn't it? I was smiling as I was reading your story, but at least you had good news about the fibroid in the end. I've had 4 or 5 u/s's so I know that horrible and painful feeling you get when you drink all that water and then have to hold it in. How did you hold it for over 2 hours I want to know? I couldn't even hold it once for 1/2 hour and I had to use the bathroom. The tech was not happy with me, so she made me drink more water until my bladder filled up again. What we women go through. Take care.
Guest guest
Related to ultrasounds, for transvaginal ultrasounds (using a probe wand up your hooha) you don't have to drink as much water. Years ago I had the standard belly type u/s and they told me to drink 5 - 8 ounce glasses of water an hour beforehand. I tend to be dehydrated and don't get thirsty and as a result my body has adapted somewhat to operating with less H2O than average. That much water in that much time went right through me and I was in so much pain from my bladder being full at the end of the appointment that they had to help me up from the table because I couldn't lift myself. So as a word of advice, if you know that the quantity of water they are advising is A LOT compared to what you are used to, drink somewhat in moderation. Besides, these are standards that they use across the population and a 5'2 " woman and a 6'3 " man don't have the same ability to hold their water. On a related note I found out a few months ago that it is the brain, specifically the hypothalmus and the pituitary, which determines how quickly water passes through the system. You know how some days you can drink massive amounts of water and don't have to pee and other days you have a sip of tea and you have to run to the bathroom just to let out a dribble? Tea is a diuretic so that is partly to blame, but some of it is just based on how much the salt to potassium to water ratio. Here are a few links Water And Sodium Metabolism http://www.merck.com/mrkshared/mmanual/section2/chapter12/12b.jsp " TBW volume is regulated by thirst, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion, and the kidneys. Osmoreceptors in the anterolateral hypothalamus are stimulated by elevation in plasma osmolality and stimulate the adjacent thirst centers. Stimulation of thirst results in the cognitive perception of thirst and subsequent increased water intake. The osmoreceptors also respond to hyperosmolality by stimulating ADH release by the posterior pituitary. ADH secretion in turn results in increased water reabsorption in the distal nephron by increasing the permeability of this otherwise relatively impermeable segment of the nephron to water. Thank you for the well wishes!!!!!
Guest guest
There's no question of me waiting with a full bladder for ultrasound. The pain is just too terrible with the pressure from the fibroid. I pee before I go, then start drinking water only once I'm in the waiting room. If they make me wait too long--I simply empty my bladder again! I refuse to suffer for their convenience, especially if they don't examine me on schedule! Strangely, I've never had a technician even notice, and then they always tell me to go empty my bladder, even if I just went before the exam! Go figure. Guest guest
When I had my last U/S the tech did an U/S with my bladder full then told me to empty it and she did another U/S. I discovered it was to check my kidneys. Apparently it's standard procedure for a fibroid >8cm. Good thing they checked because they found out that my kidneys weren't emptying properly due to my fibroid pushing against my ureter. Guest guest
Thanks for the information. I always get a transvaginal ultrasound due to both a fibroid pressing on the bladder and intersistial cystitis. Your research was very interesting. I always wondered why some days I go a lot and others not so much!
