Hi,

I'm new to this group. I'm 36yr old and have been diagnosed of

having multiple uteroid fibroids about 5.6 cm.

I'm wearing a mirena at the moment to stop my fibroids from growing.

But my recent research online suggested that I should probably seek

advice on having an uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE). My symptoms

include:

1. heavy menstrual bleeding (although mirena has stopped my prolonged

period), blood clots, anemia

2. pain, pressure, feeling of fullness in the pelvis, abdomen and

lower back and leg pain.

3. Frequent urination / constipation due to pressure on my urinary

bladder and adjacent organs.

Just wondering if there're somone out there who might already have

had UFE done?

To Mayon:

I had a UAE 11/02 and it was successful for me. I had heavy bleeding,

clotting, long periods, lots of pain, pressure, etc. (A lot like you.) I went

on

this way with heavy duty b/c pills trying to control the fibroid symptoms, and

then decided on the UAE since I was done having children. The recovery is not

bad and it's only 1 night in the hospital. By one week at home, I was almost

back to 100%. I really had only light to moderate pain the first couple of

days. I had some cramps./twinges for about 8 weeks, but it was nothing that

really even required pain meds. My results were gradually achieved after about

3 to 4 months and continued improving for almost a year. Just 2 months ago

(at 14 months after the procedure) I still had some fibroid bits expelled, and

I had an ultrasound that showed the fibroids (small ones) had shrunk

completely except for 1 teeny piece.

You should join the embo group on yahoo since there are a lot of women there

who have had the UAE and you can read their experiences.

All in all, I'm so glad I did it. Take care.

Hi, mamamia,

I and a number of other women on this site have had UAEs. Mine was

about umm, 6 years ago. My uterus at the time was about 14 weeks

size. My symptoms were similar to yours -- heavy bleeding, back

pain, frequent urination, bloating. I've been very happy with the

results. I would definitely recommend you see an interventional

radiologist for a consultation on your suitability for this

procedure. If you have specific questions about UAE, please feel

free to ask.

Do you want to have children/more children? If so, you might want to

look into having a myomectomy as UAE is currently not widely

recommended for women desiring children. The procedure can make it

difficult or impossible for some women to carry a pregnancy to term.

Hi, gueenlilycat (love your name!), I just wanted to mention that the

hormone Mirena delivers to the uterus is a progestin, a synthethic

form of progesterone which is actually one of the female hormones.

There's a whole site available from the manufacturer for anyone who's

interested at: http://www.mirena-us.com/
