Guest guest
I went through the screening process for this experimental treatment. The focused ultrasound is like a pin point and zaps (destroys the tissue in that area). It is guided to its destination using MRI. You are in the MRI tube face down for about 4 hours while they zap the fibroid(s). Recovery is immediate. Just some soreness for staying still in the tube. I believe the study is over but the treatment should be available shortly. This was done at Brighams and Women's Boston. Polly
Guest guest
Hi Janie, I had FUS on Jan. 20, 2004. Since the treatment I have had relief from back pain and less frequent urination. I never had trouble with my periods. I had one fibroid measuring 10 cm. I still feel the fibroid, esp. when my bladder is full. I don't enjoy looking " just a little pregnant " ...but then again, all my sisters seem to have that rounded belly look, with thin, strong legs and arms. I feel really good and hope in time the fibroid will shrivel up and shrink some more. I have 3 more follow up MRI's that will give me an idea if shrinkage is happening. The first MRI will be this July. ~
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for your response. So you will have three more identical procedures to the one in January? So basically as you continue you're hoping the results of each procedure will continue to shrink the fibroids? Do you live in the Boston area? Is that how you were selected to participate? Are you involved in a trial study? Is the recovery time minimal? Any side effects? If I'm interested in this procedure is there any other way to have it done? (I've tried to contact the hospital by phone call and email and no response). I'm sure they are overwhelmed with the number of woman who are interested. Just wondering are there any other options for me if I want to have this procedure done. Thanks. Janie
Guest guest
Thanks Polly! Is this the only hospital/Drs who are performing the FUS now? Are you just going to go through the screening or will you have FUS done? Thanks. Janie
Guest guest
I was eliminated from the focused ultrasound study (not surgery). I have fibroids but also have adenomoyosis. The adeno is focal (all in one spot) and is bigger than the fibroids. This is causing me my problems. I'm in wait and see for everything. I hope to be in menopause soon. Guest guest
Hi Janie, No, it's just one treatment date and then the follow up MRI's are to ck. for shrinkage from the one treatment. One day recovery involved, just feeling a little queasy from the pain meds. they administered during the procedure. No incision, no pain, back to work the next day. This procedure is in the final stages of the clinical trial. It should become available to the general population within a yr. or two at the most. ~ jbjax98@... wrote: Hi , Thanks for your response. Guest guest
Hi ! I'm new with this group and apologize if this msg will end up posted wrong. I just read a reply from to Janie regarding some kind of treatment to shrink fibroids???? I would be very much interested in knowing what that is about as I have a long history of fiborids (Myo in 1990). For the past 14 years after my myo. my doctors just kept a watchful eye over them (yearly exams and ultrasounds) but now it seems that they have grown in size (about 10cm from about 8cm 2 years ago) Today my doctors suggested that I should consider a hysterectomy, however I am not so willing to give up my uterus without a fight.( I'm 43 year old and nowhere near menopause.) I know that eventually I need to make a decision, I was thinking maybe I can get some kind of treatment (Lupron or other) to have the fibroids shrink and then having them removed by laparascopy. I would appreciate if anyone that has had a laparoscopy removal of fibroids could give me some advice. Thanking you in advance. Guest guest
Thanks and keep us posted on your follow up appts. and let us know if their is shrinkage. It may be the next procedure that many of us want to follow. Also if you find out that this procedure can be done before one to two years and any Drs you know who will perform it, many of us won't be able to wait that long.
