I kept forgetting to ask my doctor, but is bleeding to be expected

after a ab myo surgery?

Thanks

Pam

Not always - it depends on where your fibroids are. Mine were all

on the outside and I had no bleeding afterwards.

Good Luck!

I was told at pre-op that I might have a period like bleed in

hospital/after the operation. Well, ther's a catheter on you anyhow

for 1-3 days approx (it varies). IF you are getting out of bed for

the first time without a catheter. I remember a poster advising

wearing a sanitary towel getting out of bed for the first time

because of the possibility of a little bit of blood. In the NHS

hospital last year there was a protective disposable cloth across

the width of the mattress too. The patients sit in their bedside

chairs a lot of the time (Take a cardigan or similar, in addition to

a dressing gown and remember that hospital gowns are bare backed and

indecent!). I didn't have a bleed in hospital and my period

afterwards was normal. (Bad bleeding was not one of my fibroid

symptoms anyhow.) I would take in various sizes of sanitary towels,

although in the UK, the NHS hospital had towels in the ward toilets

too. Theirs were like a night size wingless type (e.g. like All-Days

Maxi. My periods immediately after the operation have all been

typical for me and normal. They were two days early but that's not

unheard of for me. It's only now, 8 months post op that I've had an

odd cycle. It may just be one of those things.

Navel-high cotton knickers are ideal, as the overall belly area will

be slightly tender when elastic digs into it (As with when you wear

something that's a bit on the tight side). At first your normal size

will feel slightly tight, but then that will ease off. Loose waisted

clothing like high waist drawstring trousers are a good idea. MAybe

this differs for women who have had keyhole surgery or a vertical

scar. My experience was with a bikini incision abdominal myo.

Be prepared for a drip, a catheter, dye on your abdomen that washes

off. Also be aware there'll be help with a bed bath the day after

your operation.( This is pretty much as you would approach the

problem yourself, doing bits of you at a time in a hopsital gwn

still, with a flannel or sponge and your own toiletries. One nurse,

curtains closed, sitting up in bed or once you are out of bed, your

own toiletries - a wet flannel bag is handy.) The stomach area is

externally numb/sensitive to the touch, but you wouldn't know unless

you touched the area. Bruising will vary. Roma said she had a lot. I

had very little and it was close around the bikini scar. The scar

it'sef was a thin pink-red line (staples) and easily covered by

bikini briefs.

Good luck March-op people! Best wishes with your recovery, Jan /

February -op people!

Oh yes..and it would also depend on what type of fibroids you have,,

I had bleeding for up to 1 week, light spotting, not heavy at all
