cancer vs. benign fibroids??

Been doing a lot of reading on the net and otherwise.

Many different sources say something to the effect of

" you don't have to worry about cancer--fibroids are

cancerous only 1 in 500 times. " I found myself

thinking about that as I got up to pee in the middle

of the night :) These same sources also talk about how

a huge number of women have fibroids--many without

knowing about it. What does that 1 in 500 mean? One in

every 500 women walking down the street? One in every

500 who have surgery? If you go to a fibroid

convention with 1000 women in the audience, will two

of them have cancer?

A few years ago, I had a lump on my thyroid. Now, only

5% of thyroid lumps are cancerous, and of those that

are, only 1 per cent turn out to be a certain kind

called Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma. Guess what. I had

MTC. (I know, I know, I should try my luck at the

lottery.)

My question is--how concerned should I be that my

fibroids have been termed " fast-growing " ? (I was a

15-week size last summer, and I'm a 20-week size now.

My only symptoms--other than pants that are too tight

in the waist--are pressure symptoms re: bladder and

bowel. No problems with periods at all.)

My doc advises hyst. I have a second opinion

consultation at UCSF's fibroid center next week. Just

trying to educate myself in the meantime.
