I went to an ob/gyn for a second opinion on my uterine fibriods,

i.e. wanting to here something order than a hysterectomy. After a

brief examination and a 5 minutes conversation, he suggested hyst.

When I challenged him about alternatives. He mentioned embolization

with all the negatives he could relate...of infections and other

problems. He directed me to a radiologist for the embolization

consultation.

I'm planning on seeing another doctor for another consultation. He

did not even mention myomectomy. Unfortunately I forgot my research

on fibriods at home.

oh well... now I'm bum out.

Welcome to the club! There are so many ignorant gynos out there who

would only recommend hysterectomy and scare people about the fact that

our fibroids are too big or that there would be too much blood with a

myo or that the myo will turn into a hyst, and then blah, blah, blah.

My former gyno told me old these things.

The gyno that did my myo told me that he NEVER had to turn a myo into a

hyst. I lost very little blood that a blood transfusion was not needed

even though I was severely anemic.

Please make sure your new doctor is at least as informed as you do.

I welcome you to the club as well! I have to agree with Jackie - having a good

gyno makes all the difference! I'm scheduled for a myo on May 17th & have

complete confidence in my gyno. When I was first diagnosed a year ago with 2-7cm

fibroids, the first thing he recommended was to wait & see if the fibroids grew

- this was after sending me for an ultrasound & an HSG.

After examining these tests, he didn't suggest surgery at all. In fact, he

prescribed Cyclo?? for my heavy bleeding & gave me a requisition form to go for

another ultrasound in 6 months. The meds worked but I had to take 3-4 pills every

4 hours to control the heavy bleeding. After going for my second ultrasound & my

follow-up appointment, we discussed the option of a myo. In my case - 37 years

old - no kids - definitley want kids - we decided this was the best route for

me. My uterus was misshaped from the fibroids - it is the size of an 18 week

pregnancy & the chance of me miscarrying was high if I did become pregant.

I sat with him for over 1/2 an hour asking questions etc. & he treated me with

the utmost respect - he answered all my questions & made me feel like a person!

He told me the risks involved - ie: hysterectomy, blood transfusion but in all

the myo's he had performed none had turned to hysterctomy or blood transfusions.

It's extremely important to go to someone that you have complete confidence in.

If it takes 5 doctors - it's worth it. Remember you are a person not a number -

you deserve to be treated that way by your doctor.

Good Luck

Thank you so much Jackie. I have another appointment to see another

OB/GY on April 8. This one is female. I hope that makes a

difference. I don't know what I would have done without this site

and information from caring and informed people such as you will to

share their experiences to help others.

Cheryl...you cannot imagine how much what you shared and that of

Jackie meant to me. I am resolved to see as many doctor as possible

until I'm confortable with them and their suggestion and it meets my

expected outcome, which is no hyst unless it becomes life or death.

Thank you so much. I do appreciate learning of your experience.
