Hi Carol-

I had a pretty good experience with my resection. FWIW, I was

scheduled early, at 10 AM but had to be there at around 8. They

assigned me to an ambulatory area, so I was expected to walk to the

OR; had I not had my usually heavy period, I would have enjoyed the

walk a lot more. I was trying to keep the pad in place with no

underwear as I hobbled down the hall...I recommend going by gurney if

you have any bleeding. " This is the ambulatory section. You have to

walk. Sorry. "

I had a 9 cm. pendunculated fibroid resected in May 2003. It was

never seen on the MRI so my gyn was not sure of the size beforehand

other than " something " certainly was in there causing all of my

bleeding. It was a large one to be resected but I was lucky, and my

bleeding has been pretty light since then. What a difference!

I was quite anemic despite iron infusions so I was kept overnight in

the hospital. My surgery took 1.5 hours, and I had a D & C as I had

my period, so there was only spotting afterward. They tried an

epidural as far as the anesthesia but had to switch to a general as I

was kicking the doctor (!) but I was blissfully OUT and remember

nothing after the initial shot happened. I have had general

anesthesia before and had no problems with it and would choose this

anytime I was faced with surgery. Some people need time to process

the anesthesia out of their bodies, which can take a few days to a

few weeks, depending on the person. I just felt tired.

As far as pain, I felt some, but it was just a general achiness in

the area. I was given too much Percocet, which was worse than the

pain itself; the second pill gave me nausea, dizziness and a freaked-

out feeling of panic. Fortunately a doctor was on hand to give me

anti-nausea medication so I only felt bad for a few moments. I would

take the least amount of painkiller that you can.

I was down to half a percocet the next day and on to regular tylenol

when I needed it during the following week. If I hadn't been so

stressed out by the anemia and other health issues I probably would

have been back in fine form pretty quickly.

Hope this helps - you'll be fine and the blasted fireball will be OUT!

Cheers-

Jan
