Hello ladies

have been reading for a few weeks and have a question for those of you that have

had a resection.

Following a HSG I was diagnosed with a septum and finally had it resected on

march 24/05. My Dr said it was textbook and everthing went great, I am now

taking 4mg of estrace daily for 30 days. I' m for a repeat HSG in three months

to see what if any septum is left. My questions

1)How long did it take for those of you taking estrogen to have side effects?

2)I had very minimal bleeding forthe first 3-4 days following my resection, and

I'm now bleeding a moderate amount ( no more than a heavy period), Af was due

this week so I'm not sure if that is why the bleeding has increased or if it is

due to the resection. My OB\gyn was not concerned when she removed my catheter

on the 30th but she didn't do the resection, (I had to go out of province for my

resection).

Any advice you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leah-

I had my septum resected on 02/17/05. Like you I had very minimal

bleeding the first few days, but then I think it got a little

heavier for 2-3 more days. I took estrogen (premarin 4 mg/day for 14

days) and didn't experience any noticeable side effects -- except

that it messed up my cycle. One week after stopping the estrogen I

had " withdrawal bleeding " which was light spotting for a few days.

Then my RE put me on birth control to get AF regulated again. Hope

this helps!

By the way, I went back for my follow-up appointment today - 6 weeks

after surgery. I did not have an HSG, the RE just did an ultrasound

to look at how the lining has grown back, and a hydrosonogram (sort

of similar to an HSG). He said that everything looked great, no

scarring and no leftover septum. Good luck to you & I hope you get a

good report when you go back in!

hi leah

i had a resection last march/9 - afterwards i was put on premarin

1.25 4/day (estrogen) for 30 days and provera (medroxyprogesterone)

10mg 1/day for the last 10 days of those 30 -

the premarin gave me headaches the 1st 3 or 4 days - after that i

didn't have any other side effects so far except for lots of

cervical mucus (egg white). i started to take provera today and so

far i haven't noticed any side effects ... maybe it's too soon to

tell - i don;t know if i'll have any other side effects when i stop

taking both in 10 days - any comments about it will be appreciated -

i haven't searched any additional info about this ...

as for the surgery aftermath: i also had only minimal bleeding 3 or

4 days after surgery and then i'm sure i got my period - the usual

lenght and volume. i'm waiting for my 2nd period after surgery -

that should come anytime now ... i don;t know how the drugs will

affect it ....

i'm sure my 2nd bleeding after surgery was my period cause i had

been on clomid for the clomid challenge a couple of weeks before and

i got my period on CD28 or CD29 because of that - otherwise AF would

have showed at around CD32/CD38 .....

don't you think this bleeding you're having now could be your period?

what if you call the surgeon who did the resection and ask him/her

if that's normal?

are you bleeding the same amount every day? or is it less and less?

i would be concerned if you didn't see the volume become less and

less with the days ... although i guess your best bet is to call the

dr or nurse and ask them what's really 'normal' or common after

surgery - for instance i had lower right abdominal pain for 3 weeks

after the surgery and thought it meant problems cause most women in

this site said they had recovered quite fast but nothing happened -

apparently it took me longer than other women to get back to

normal ....

i asked my RE and his partner (another RE) if i needed a follow up

HSG and they both said no but they had me go for an US today -

everything looked OK, no adhesions and still no septum :), the

endometrium seems normal and it looks like is healing OK .....

i'm not sure i've helped but i hope you can get the answers to your

questions ....

good luck,

gabi

Gabi, I've noticed on a lot of these messages about septum resection that

everyone seems to go on between 1-4 mg of Premarin after their resection

surgery. Why is that? I didn't get Premarin for any of the 3 surgeries I had

and only got Premarin to counteract my endometriosis shot of 6 months using

Lupron Depot. The premarin was only 0.625 mg for 6 months to help me deal

with my hot flashes. Does anyone know why everyone seems to go on Premarin

after a septum resection? Does it help with the healing or scar tissue or

what does it do exactly for u after surgery? Just wondering, thanks a lot.

If u can point me to a resource or a webpage about it, that would help too.

I'd like to tel my RE about it and maybe that's why my septum grew back

after my surgery. I have a follow-up (4th time) HSG to see what happened

with this surgery and they did the resection with scissors not the laser

thing.

Thanks a lot, good luck

Angie

hi angie

i've just read the book my RE wrote in 1998 (Structural

Abnormalities and Reproductive Failure: Effective Techniques for

Diagnosis and Management by Gerard S. Letterie) and i read also some

other docs - i think in this website - or maybe it was just the

posted messages ... and the subject of estrogen (i.e. premarin)

after resection is a controversial one.

some drs prescribe it cause they say/think it helps prevent

scarring/adhesions and some drs don't because apparently it has not

been confirmed that estrogen helps with that .... so i guess it just

depends on your RE's school of thought - if they prescribe it (i'm

gonna copy what the book says here) the dosage is " 2.5mg conjugated

estrogen 2/day for 30 days followed by 10mg provera

(medroxyprogesterone) 1/day for 10 days to induce reliable

withdrawal " - apparently this is the 'current practice' or what my

RE would refer to as 'the standard of care' nowadays ....

with respect to the re-growing of your septum: i just had a follow

up u/s today and i asked my RE's partner if it's posible that the

septum will come back - she said it may happen sometimes if the

2 'ends' of what's left 'stick' together .... i don't know how

likely that is or why that would happen and she didn't elaborate

either - did you get any explanations? did you get a 2nd 3rd or 4th

opinion? i'm sorry but i don't have any more info about it ...

i hope this helps ....

when are you having your follow up HSG?

in the book it says you should have a follow up HSG but then they

had me go for an u/s instead .... i had mine today and when i asked

my RE's partner why not another HSG she said the u/s gives them more

info ... i don't know.... anyway so far this u/s looked OK - we'll

see what happens in the next couple of months ...

good luck with your follow up

Gabi, thank you so much for all the wonderful information. My follow-up HSG

is on April 12th. So we will see what happens and I will let you know. I do

want an ultrasound too though because of course I also have endometriosis. I

had an OB/GYN (well, 3 different ones) and I threw a hissy fit after they

diagnosed me as UD, UU, and BU 3 different views from 3 different docs so I

went to the Patient Representative at the Hospital and wrote a statement and

this is my 4th opinion that I finally got to go to see an RE and he has been

doing this for nearly 30 years and is absolutely wonderful. I wouldn't have

it any other way, but it took me a lot of pain and confusion to finally get

where I am now. The 3rd OB/GYN actually told me to start TTC then when I

have 3 m/c they will do something about it. I WAS OUTRAGED!!!! Oh yeah, and

he told to me to just stay on BC and wouldn't even give me an u/s because of

the new symptoms I had at the time which has now turned out to be

endometriosis. HE WAS A MAN OF COURSE, and very uncompassionate. So I

finally got an RE.

Anyway, No I didn't get any explanations as to why my septum grew back but

thank god they said only 1/2 of it grew back and not the part that was

2/3rds the way through my cervix. I am a little worried about my HSG coming

up though because the last time they attempted the water HSG after my last

surgery, my uterus and cervix would not hold water and they actually pushed

that catheter thing through my cervix 5 times attempting 5 times to fill it

with the water stuff. That is why I had my 3rd hysteroscope surgery to see

what was going on in there and thats when they found out that it had

actually grown back!!! So here we go again, another HSG to check it out. I

am also a little worried that after they cut out that septum piece that was

2/3rds the way through my cervix I might have cervical incompetance after

that. What do you think? I hope not. But if it is c/i, will I be able to

hold a baby in there with a few stitches or whatever. What month of preg

would they put the stitch in?

Also, I would like to get the book your doc wrote. Can I buy it on amazon or

where? Thank you so much for your wonderful advice!!!! You are a very smart

and educated woman!!!! Seriously

Thanks again, good luck

Angie

Thanks for answering my questions It is always so usefull talking with

people how are going through the same thing.

The second bleeding must have been my period. It has almost stopped and the

estrogen has only made my breasts moderatly uncomfortable.

I'll be going back to work tomorrow, so now the waiting begins for my June

27 HSG & IVP

Leah,

Looks like we are on the same cycle. I have my surgery 3/29 to resected.

I have a follow up appointment on 4/13. Do you know what the next step is?

Thanks for the info.
