There is so much fuss over metformin and I can't figure out why folks aren't asking their doctors for the extended release type. I know that some still experience some gastric distress with that, but I think it's normally mild and doesn't last long. I have a sensitive stomach and worried about it when I began, but made sure to take it just before I ate and had no problems. Now I take 2000 mg of the ER (extended release) sort just before bed and on an essentially empty stomach (well, you know...maybe I had some nuts for a snack but it's normally a pretty empty stomach) and have no problems. Ask for the extended release sort. Some brands are metformin ER and some use XR but it's the same stuff. -=sky=- Type 2 dx'd 9/04/04. LC, Metaformin XR, Humalog. Guest guest
I never heard of extended release metformin. I guess I could ask about it, but my goal is to get off all the medications as soon as possible. I want to be totally diet control if possible, although with my fasting level blood sugar this morning being 173 I guess it will be awhile. Guest guest
Kathleen, diabetes is a progressive disease. How fast it progresses really depends on a lot of factors, but one of them is keeping your BGs in the normal, nondiabetic range. The longer you can do this, the slower the disease will progress. , one of our prime posters, was controlled with diet and exercise for probably 6 or 7 years and for all that time he had excellent, " non-diabetic " numbers. Yet he finally had to start medication. But without that excellent control, he may have had to start meds at 4 years instead of 7 or 8. The need for medicine to control diabetes doesn't mean you've failed. Only that the disease is just doing its own thing, alas. Guest guest
I could get some Light 85 yogurt, Walmart carries it and it's sweetened with Splenda. I think that I'll be in town tomorrow (I live 30 minutes from town, so I try to combine trips). Kathleen > > Metformin is supposed to make you more sensitive to insulin. Guest guest
Lee here: I use the dannon Light'n fit Carb Control yogurt from walmart. Vanilla. 3gr of carb and splenda for sweetening. Will have to check about live culture. Thanks > > > > Metformin is supposed to make you more sensitive to insulin. Guest guest
Kathleen, As Sue said, the best yogurt for combatting the " gasto-difficulties " is one with live cultures. Those aren't generally the cheapest & typically aren't sweetened with " anything " . Splenda is OK (for most of us), but don't get one of the " fruity " ones either as they are full of carbs.
