Guest guest
Hi - I have another question. I've been taking digestive enzymes with meals for a long time after reading how important they are. But since being diagnosed recently, I'm wondering if these are a good thing for diabetics? I see some of the medications actually seem to block breakdown of food (so it enters the bloodstream slower) and digestive enzymes are supposed to help break down food so you absorb the nutrients better and have a better overall digestive health. Nobody I ask seems to know whether it is good or not to take digestive enzymes if diabetic (even the diabetic center/nutritionist). Guest guest
Even diabetics need the nutrients in food. (Maybe I should say, *especially* diabetics?) If your food doesn't digest well, you will not receive its benefits. I've been using various digestive enzymes for many years, well before I was dx'd. I know I feel better when I do. Presently, I am using bromelain (from pineapple stems). I have never noticed any negative results of doing so, regarding my bgs. Guest guest
Hi , I actually did stop taking the digestive enzymes the last few days but there are so darn many variables in BS that it's hard to say if there is any difference. My biggest differences in BS readings is exercise. I eat the same thing for breakfast every morning - an extremely low carb hot cereal - usually, my BS reading is low 1 to 2 hours after - like in the 70s to 90s BUT this is because I ride my exercise bike or do Tae Bo for 15 minutes (and probably because my Amaryl is kicking in). Yesterday, I didn't ride my bike and it spiked to 130 (going up about 20 points from fasting instead of dropping or only going up 5 or 10) - the difference - no exercise. I don't know if I could tell whether or not they make a difference but since I've been in real good control for this past month since being diagnosed, I'd say they don't cause spikes. Anyway - back to digestion - I did not have any digestion problems per say - unless you mean GERD - that I did have quite bad where I used to take meds for it. Since taking the digestive enzymes, probiotics and drinking baking soda/water - I got off the meds and no longer have GERD. The longer food " ferments " in your system, the worse off your digestive organs, liver are. Just wasn't sure if I was helping or hurting the diabetic problems. -------------------------------------------------------------- < >

Hi Sandy, It's interesting that you were able to stop your meds for GERD. If this is too off topic, please, write privately and let me know what kind of digestive enzymes/probiotics you used and how you were able to stop your meds for GERD. There's nothing I'd like better than to be able to get off of Nexium. Thanks, in OH grammyDx2 at neo.rr.com
