Guest guest
We are considering buying a home we have been told is in a " red zone " . Apparently there is a toxic waste dump nearby that was contaminating the water so all homes in this zone were put on city water & not wells. The dump has since been capped & no one in the area seems concerned. Is there any cause for concern anymore? Please respond if you can (on or off list) as we need to make a quick decision! Thanks in advance, Michele
Guest guest
Hi Michele, I would be hesitant. I would worry about the toxic waste leaching into the soil. But, in all honesty, I don't have any knowledge about this. I am going off my gut instinct. > We are considering buying a home we have been told is in a " red zone " . > Apparently there is a toxic waste dump nearby that was contaminating the water so > all homes in this zone were put on city water & not wells. Guest guest
Birth defects, cardiovascular problems, asthma, other allergic conditions are documented to be significantly worse in such areas, and its more from toxic air emissions(outgassing) than from effects of drinking water. It may depend somewhat on the extent to which the cap is effective, but history doesn't speak well of such areas. It depends somewhat on what was buried there- landfills have outgasing of mercury, benzene, many other volatile toxics. Bernie
Guest guest
I called up the DEP for the area & they told me it was capped in 2001 (they dig down a few feet & remove whatever they can) & is being monitored. They didn't have any toxins listed & their ground water folks did not have any interest. I can only go by what they told me & what our realtor told us. She told us that it was a " toxic waste dump " that was contaminating the water supply so folks were put on city water. The DEP called it a landfill & didn't know of any toxins but knew it was capped in 2001. The DEP told me that the house we are interested in buying is about a mile from this & there is a " slim " chance of air contamination & no chance the soil by us would be affected. I'm not sure what to think yet. Any feedback on this new info? Thanks again, Michele > Birth defects, cardiovascular problems, asthma, other allergic conditions are documented to be significantly worse in such areas, and its more from toxic air emissions(outgassing) than from effects of drinking water.
