Guest guest
Does anybody know of any problems with bgs as a result of taking codeine? I'm not nearly ready to stop taking the stuff because this cough is so bad I can't sleep without the drugs. Gotta love the drugs. So far (two days) I'm running around 113 when I would expect to be under 100, so either the meds or the broncial thing itself is causing a little rise, I guess. I know, rely on my meter, but I'd like to know if there's any really adverse indications I should look out for. CarolR
Guest guest
Oh, well I guess my doc knows what he's doing then. He told me no cough syrups - too much sugar, and gave me the pills instead. But, like you, I'm not stopping it no matter what. Guest guest
there is a diabetic cough syrup and you can get codeine pills. I am allergic to codeine so never get that. ml Carol wrote: > Oh, well I guess my doc knows what he's doing then. He told me no cough > syrups - too much sugar, and gave me the pills instead. I'll keep it in mind in case I get another cough that won't go away. sky
Guest guest
Lou, I am also allergic to codeine. What kind of reaction did you have with it? Mine was over forty years ago, and it made my heart race. Since then, I've always tried to avoid it. Sue > there is a diabetic cough syrup and you can get codeine pills. Guest guest
Carol Cough is one of my big problems. Nyquil or the generic equals works as well as any prescription meds. But I don't like taking multiple ingredient preparations hoping one will be what I need. Also that induces the gag reflex with me and now just the smell will do it. So it is almost impossible to take now. Guaifensen is available as a non-narcotic single ingredient tablet. Guaifensen is the active ingredient in many OTC preparations. For a long time I took it nightly but now my cough is bad enough hardly anything controls it. I take Tylenol 3 as needed for neuropathy and when taken with the guaifensen adds the codeine. Recently I have tried a prescription pill benzonatate perlos, a non narcotic soft gel tablet as I had told my doctor I wanted to try to get by without the narcotic included. It numbs the sensors in the lungs. Pancough HC (generic Coldcough HC) is a syrup that is one of the tighter government controlled substances. I've tried a number of other prescription and OTC medications. I don't see an effect on my blood glucose. I try, but not always possible to just take it at bedtime. I have never smoked nor lived or worked in a smoky environment as tobacco smoke has bothered me in I can remember. None of my family smokes and I had " no smoking " signs in my house and car long before it became acceptable. Just being near someone who has smoked or even been near a smoker really gets to me. Last year I was evaluated for asthma, given asthma medications, which didn't help, but no actual asthma diagnosis. My cough has worsened so much in the last several months that I am now taking steps to get to the root of the problem. My son-in-law died last year from asbestos related cancer. My sister now almost disabled with it but so far it has not developed into cancer. I have been exposed to asbestos and last week I had a catscan of my lungs. I see the pulmonary doctor tomorrow. As I am finding out a persistent chronic cough needs follow up. If you can isolate an offending substance, like smoke but there are many others, eliminate that. I certainly understand what a bad cough can effect you. But as to your question about glucose I do not see a connection including the syrups on me. Guest guest
I recently discovered that there is a Cough Center (medical facility) in Mission Viejo, CA. Wonder if there is something like that in your area? Apparently indicriminate coughing is a real thing. There were three of us at the dr's office. Guest guest
Dianne, He describes it as being throughout all of the calf, not just the back (as you probably know, the sciatic nerve travels down the back of the leg). Other than that it sounds a lot like sciatica. He just got home from work, and its 8pm (I'm sure he doesn't want to read right now, as it's been an unusually long day, just what he needed) so I'm going to print some info on it and tell him to read it when he gets a chance and to take it with him to his Chiropractor appt. tomorrow. If so, his doctor should test him for sciatica. It is very painful, but responds to a medication called neurontin. For me, the relief was miraculous, although the medication has some quirks when you first start taking it. Dianne

So > it is almost impossible to take now. > I agree with you about not taking multi-ingredient preparations - I prefer to take just what I need. And codeine makes me nauseous. Last year, I discovered an OTC medicine called Dexalone. It is capsules or pills, I forget which, but it has just dextromethorphan, which is the cough suppressant in Robitussin-DM (and other -DM preparations). I like this better than taking a " diabetic " cough syrup with artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately, the local heroin addicts have discovered that DM is an opioid agonist, that is, it enhances and extends the effects. So our pharmacist keeps it behind the counter. It's still OTC, you just have to ask for it. Or you could try googling it to purchase online. -- el (andreafrankel at sbcglobal dot net) " wake now!
