Guest guest
Good morning - ok - I took my blood glucose level and it is 5.4 or 97. I think I am going to have some oatmeal (slow cooked) for breakfast and see how that affects my sugar level. I do plan on swimming again this morning (or maybe a light weight workout at the gym) so I want something that is going to last. I don't know if I should add fruit in there as that would be too much in the carbs I believe. maybe have a slice of cheese - I need to buy some almonds again for a quick protein. Does that sound like a good breakfast? Shauna :-)
Guest guest
Shauna, Cook the oatmeal as little as possible, because overcooking breaks it down & will make it spike your bg higher than if it's cooked " just enough " . Actually, same goes for vegies too---Cook " aldente " for the least effect on bg's. Raw will have the least effect on bg's. Having something with some fat & little carbs like cheese will somewhat mitigate the spiking effect of the oatmeal, so I'd consider it a good idea. Personally, I use nuts for snacks, but here again with the oatmeal they probably will help lessen the spike & provide energy for a longer period of time (fat & protein). My breakfasts usually consist of some leftover low-GI vegies, eggs (real or fake). I've gotten over the idea of what traditionally constitutes " breakfast " food. ***************************************** , T2, dx'ed 4/98 with Fasting bg 350mg/dl & HbA1c 15.5% Controlling until last month with LC-D & very little E Average Fasting bg 105mg/dl, Last HbA1c 6.0% 7+ Year Historical HbA1c 5.6%-6.0% Now Experimenting with Metformin, Glyburide & " Merlot Therapy " for HbA1c nearer 5.0% >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>> Good morning - ok - I took my blood glucose level and it is 5.4 or 97. Guest guest
Thanks for the input – I will keep that in mind next time… I had a spike after scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of multigrain toast with 1 tbsp of sugar-free jam – hit 9.0 or 162 an hour after eating… missed testing at 2 hours and at 3 I had dinner out with hubby – Caesar salad with salmon… had ½ tonight – will have the other half for lunch tomorrow… that seemed to be ok – as I am only 5.3 or 95.4 1 hour after eating… and I have ½ a piece of foccia (sp?) bread to boot! So I guess I get to have a bit more to eat tonight before going to bed… Shauna :-) _____ Shauna, Cook the oatmeal as little as possible, because overcooking breaks it down & will make it spike your bg higher than if it's cooked " just enough " . Guest guest
Shauna, those 2 pieces of toast and the foccacia probably raised your BG a fair amount. Even multigrain breads will do this. Any product made with grain -- cereals, pasta, bread, etc. -- as well as rice and root veggies -- tend to do this although there's some YMMV factor here. That's why testing before and after eating is so important in the beginning. Vicki RE: Morning BG Thanks for the input - I will keep that in mind next time. Guest guest
The toast – yup I would say so… but surprising the fociccia didn’t spike me… it was a very small and light piece… I was only 5.3 or 95.4 one hour after eating… And 2 hour later I had an apple for a snack and one hour later I was only 5.7 or 102.6… so I guess apples are good for me crabwise… I find that I am hungry at the moment – and seeing as my BG hasn’t been too high tonight I will have some laughing cow cheese and triscuits… Thank you for all your wonderful information (not just Vicki!) Guest guest
O, how I wish I could eat Triscuits! But I couldn't eat Just One... I remember how in the days before diabetes I used to eat a dozen at a sitting... O well, I can enjoy the memory. And that doesn't harm my BGs, smile... Guest guest
Well - an hour later and I am still at 5.6 after 8 triscuits and the cheese. so now I am concerned about making sure I have enough to get me thru the night so that I am not too low in the morning. should I be concerned? Guest guest
Hi Shauna, I've been reading your adventures, and my guess is that you got away with the foccacia bread and later, the apple, because your morning swim may have been working to keep you lower all day. You may find that some other time, without the exercise, this food would spike you. Guest guest
Excellent point - I will keep that in mind. and I will use it to motivate me to do some exercise this morning. Guest guest
Only you know if you should be concerned. Why not set your alarm for 2:00 a.m. and check? Guest guest
Shauna, I had a low of 60 for the first time at 2am this morning. I woke up and was able to correct. I keep two packets of sugar by the bedside if ever I am too weak to get to the meter to check. You might want to do that or get glucose tabs in the event you go low in the night.
