Advisory Against L-Arginine (x-post)

For those considering or using l-arginine, this week an interesting

result emerged from a study at s Hopkins, where researchers have

recommended not using the supplement in patients that have had MIs. The

study doesn't identify a risk to those who have not had a heart attack,

but in closing, the authors say the study results in " implications " to

those " without established [heart] diseases " .

It has been suggested that the results could be dependent on some sort

of drug intereaction, and I hope to reach the study's author to get

feeback on the notion. It certainly appears to be a supplement to keep

an eye on for future research.

Aside from them both being amino acids, I can't really speak to the

relationship between the two (much less the implications of the

*potential* dangers of one vs. the other). The study referenced earlier

does not mention l-carnitine.

Since the study focused only on those patients who were taking

l-arginine as part of a theraputic regimen after a heart attack, I'm

less inclined to be concerned. If anyone is an expert and could speak

to how closely related the two amino acids are, that would be helpful

....
