linda,

i have never had a UGI. however, in the hospital where i work, patients DO

have to stop taking metformin prior to having some studies done. the

reason is that something in the metformin affects the way the contrast

shows up on the x-ray, and also the metformin can interact with the

contrast material to produce side effects. i am not sure if you have to

stop metformin for the UGI, but i know you do for studies using contrast

materials containing iodine. the UGI uses barium which may not be a

problem w/metformin.

here's a link: http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/metf-qa.htm

the person i would talk to is an x-ray technologist at the hospital or

clinic where you will have it done. they are the ones who would know. of

course, do talk to your doctor, but i'm suggesting this just in case you

get the runaround.

hope this helps,

kcd

I had a study done that did use contrast dye and I only learned

anything about it when I went to actually have the study done. Then I

tried to get information for next time, if there ever is one. Some

said stop it 24 hours or more before the study and more important after

the study, and some said just 2-3 days after the study. It is difficult

to get good information. And I don't know how it is with your test.
