Hi. If your friend's son eats lots of potatoes, corn, or rice, this

might be a cause of the constipation. Some kids don't have the

enzymes that breakdown those foods, the undigested food putrifies and

rots inside their guts causing bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation

all while feeding bacteria and yeast. Check out the Specific

Carbohydrate Diet, it might help. Tina

I have a friend who has a foster child right now who is the same way. She

gets plenty of fiber at their house but if she stays with someone else for a

few days she is constipated when she returns. She is not a very active

child. This might make a difference.

Subject: [ ] Causes of constipation?

Hi, my friend asks me to post a question for her. Her son (3 yo) has to eat

lots and lots of fiber (from brown and vegetables) otherwise he will

constipate. Is this normal? If not, what could be the reasons for

constipation? and how to solve it? Thanks.

Personally I don't feel it is normal, however it does seem to be " the

norm " these days. Our pedi says constipation is the number one

reason for office visits to him for kids under age 4 or something

like that. GI doc referrals have increased something like 130% over

the last decade. I think vaccines have a role in that they damage

the intestinal tract but also environmental toxin load and the crappy

diet that we eat. Look at how much of our food is processed in some

way... I also think that perhaps there might even be some genes that

may be related to constipation-- making a person more vulnerable to

having it esp when the environmental burden/load is high.

Constipation also occurs with lead and metal toxicity and so if he's

never had his lead levels checked with his pedi, it would be a good

idea to do, esp in the summer because the blood lead levels are

higher in the summer months (than if the child was tested in the

fall/winter months) (read that in a study somewhere on one of these

boards).

What to do--keep up the fiber. If that's what works, then keep it

up. Try to increase liquids. Get him on a multivitamin, one that

has b's and magnesium, preferably a liquid multivitamin for better

absorption. Have her check into brainchild's formulations. Rubbing

his tummy with massage oil or even doing castor oil in a clockwise

motion will help. Trying to establish a regular " sitting time " on

the toilet will help train his body to have an urge at a regular time

during the day. That is, asking him to sit on the toilet after meals

for five-ten minutes without any expectation that he will have a bm.

The idea is just to sit. Doing it after a meal takes advantage of

the body's natural contracting actions of the gut.

I don't have constipation figured out yet. My son had it, but it

improved after we chelated with dmsa. My dd has it. I've chelated

her, but she still has it. She seems NT in every other aspect. I

have recently started having her chew Fiber Choice-- I give her about

a half a wafer a day. I will try working up slowly and see if this

helps. It definitely is making her stool more consistent in shape

and color and size, but she just isn't ever getting an urge to go on

her own! Frustrating. She might try the fiber choice wafers in that

it's an easy way to get more fiber into him-- don't get the sugar

free ones--just get the regular ones. They have an orange taste to

them.
