Guest guest
I'm converting to Catholicism (after being raised Baptist) but this comment didn't offend me, nor do any of the religious comments posted. Probably I'll delete most of them without reading after this b/c that's the joy of the board -- read what you want; delete what you don't want! I just think religion is like anything else -- you get out what you put into it and it IS like anything else: good and bad; people, events, etc. They do need money to survive and the Bible does expect you tithe. I give each Sunday what I can and I include it in my budget. But I have seen churches out there that nickel and dime you to death for money constantly; I too am turned off by those particular churches, no matter what their denomination might be. I don't necessarily agree with every single thing the Catholic church puts out and that's okay. I'm sure they don't agree with me. God and I will figure out in the end, when the time comes. It's a private thing! I participate where I want in the activities that my church offers and feel welcome, even though it is a long process to convert and there were (and are) a lot of hoops to jump through. I'm not there yet -- it may still be a while. All in God's time and that's cool. I used to dislike all things religious -- probably b/c I'm a preacher's kid and had to do every church service there was, every week, in and out, without a break. And with Carole for my mom, it could be horrendous. So I took a break and then I came back, of my own free will, when I had kids. But I preach to no one, just share my story . . . God saved my husband's life this summer when an air tank (like firemen wear on their backs) exploded when he was dismantling it by cutting it in half. The gauge ready empty when in fact it had 1200 pounds of pressure in it. My husband was bent over it with a power saw in his right hand, his left hand resting on the top of the tank and when he began to saw it -- it exploded. But immediately prior to the explosion -- someone (his father, who died in December 2004, or God or whatever higher power you choose) pushed him back and the only injuries that he suffered that July day were a major injury to his left (dominant) hand and cuts to his right hand. He was home alone that day, yet he was not knocked unconscious and was able to get to the next door neighbor's to get help. He had surgery on his left hand to remove a lot of muscle and to fix his thumb; he was in the hospital for three days. He has had one reconstructive surgery since and will probably have one additional surgery this fall. He should've died that day but he didn't. But for the grace of God .. . . You don't have to go to church to feel God's presence in your life . . . He's there every day. The church part just makes it better, when you are able to find the right one! And I thank God every day for this board, its members and the help that all of it has brought to my life. This is the comment I was offended by. As a Catholic I am justified to let you know that. I work with the public (dental hygientist) and have learned that politics and religion are off bounds. People get their feelings hurt or riled up too easily with these subjects. Respect is called for here.
