I've noticed that some of you use butyrate and some of you AKG to

reduce ammonia levels. I'm interested in knowing why you prefer one

over the other, and any pros and cons you can relate.

Thanks,

Arginine is the standard of treatment for hyperammonemia. The only form of

butyrate that has been proven to work is sodium butyrate so buyer beware.

Also, bicarbonate is critical in the beginning of the urea cycle which is

where ammonia is released. Bicarb is also a major problem for children with

autism and epilepsy. According to Dr.'s Shaw and Baker most autistic

children are extremely low in bicarb which of course would impair ammonia

excretion. The important thing is to know where in the urea cycle the

problems are occuring. Most often the problem is with the arginase enzyme

which requires arginine to operate properly.

-- We had excellent results using Cal/mag butyrate for

hyperammonemia. Major improvements came very quickly. We also gave

bicarbs 90-120 minutes after meals.

We don't bother with this any more as our son's hyperammonemia seems

to have resolved itself, although we keep some alpha-keto on hand for

occasional use.

> How do you diagnose hyperammonemia - Is it stool, urine or blood?

-- Our son was diagnosed by blood, but I am not sure what " the proper

way " to do it is. Anyway, his blotchy complexion (like an old drunk)

indicated serious hyperammonemia. Improving his diet and giving

enzymes also helped address this problem
