Hey Joanie. I had Lap. I was in the hosp. 2 days with little pain,

then sent home. Close to normal after 2 weeks. Why are u getting

the other surgery? Is that all your surgen offers or is it the best

procedure for u?

I had an open RNY two weeks ago (11/28). I went home 2 days later

with a binder. Got rid of that in 2 days and pain meds by the

following Monday. Any open abdominal procedure has the added healing

time for the incision site. Every body is a little different

depending on age and other individualities. I was determined to get

back to " real life " ASAP so I've been a model " patient " . The hardest

thing for me has been asking people to DO things for me. I've got a

lifting restriction of 10# but I've already found out (the hard way)

that 5-6# is OK...and 10#'s isn't comfortable.

I've been very lucky in regards to RNY recovery. I was on liquids 3

weeks pre-op and 1 week post-op. My diet right now isn't very

diverse but it's high in protein and it stays down. Eggs, string

cheese, PB on crackers, tuna on crackers, chicken salad on crackers,

cottage cheese and soup.

I see my surgeon tomorrow and expect to return to work on Thursday on

a PT basis. Best of luck to you. - Diann

I had the lap, which is 6 tiny incisions and the recovery was

incredibly fast. You will be sore for much longer, I'm afraid. There

isn't really any way to sugar coat it. It is a big cut in your belly.

You won't be able to drive at first or lift much for several weeks so

make sure you have someone to help with laundry, housework, and

groceries. Not that you yourself will need many groceries. I bought

WAY too much and it'll end up in the trash.

My guess is that a big problem will be sleeping. Getting in and out of

bed and finding a comfortable position might be difficult. Do you have

a recliner or comfy chair? That is what most people have success with.

I forgot in the other post....

I don't know if will help or not, but I started shakes a couple of

months before my surgery. I enjoy them because they taste like

milkshakes to me. I already liked smoothies and these were the same,

but with less calories and more protein.

A lot of people don't like them, or their doctors don't recommend

them. I can't see how in the world they could hurt so I was going to

use them regardless. Some people say their tastes changed

significantly after surgery and suggested not buying much before hand.

My tastes haven't changed at all.

Good places for samples are www.bethsproteinboutique.com. They are 99

cents through December. www.vitalady.com and www.bariatriceating.com

also have them. If you find one or more you really like, shop around.

I found www.bodybuilding.com is usually competitive and their S/H

rates were good but there might be cheaper places.

My hope was/is that getting protein and vitamins in ahead of time

might lessen the shock to my system and help with recovery. If it

helps reduce the hair loss that often follows about 4 months post-op,

that won't be so bad either.

Pre-op, I also started on the sublingual B12 and the calcium (must be

citrate). You'll need chewable or powdered calcium for a while after

surgery so don't buy too many horse tablets. I found a good powdered

calcium citrate by NOW at www.allstarhealth.com. I add it to my

protein shakes along with a fiber powder (soluble fiber, not

insoluble). Remember with vitamins that you won't be able to absorb

the oil based ones properly after the surgery, so you'll have to buy

" dry " ones. Don't overdo any fat soluble ones pre-op because they

store up in you your system. B12 (must be sublingual post-op) is ok to

do now if you want because it is water soluble and won't hurt. My B12

labs were in the " normal " range but below the value I've read is

optimal so I started it early.
