The morning of my surgery I woke my three children up and kissed/hugged and told them I loved them and started crying and said I can't do this--but than reality took over and I remembered without the surgery I was facing a lot of obstacles. YOu are in a very controlled setting with top notch professionals. Your surgeon is not going to let anything happen to you!! I understand how scared you are, I'm still waiting for a peace about my surgery. My date is Dec.12, so we both with hold on to each other and we will both be fine! Just think once you have this surgery the diabetes will be in remission. HANG IN THERE!!! Are you afraid of the dangers of the surgery itself, pain from the surgery, the risks of malnutrition, or the lifestyle changes? It is easier for the people here to address your concerns if you are more specific. I just had my surgery on Monday. I am home now and I feel great. It may not be typical but I only used painkillers for the first 12 hours out of surgery. I have plenty of energy. I fully expected to go through 3-6 days of feeling like crap but I haven't yet. The absolute worst part was drinking the nasty stuff for the leak test the day after the surgery. Having the drain removed didn't really hurt either. They did have me take some painkillers about 30 minutes before just in case. One of my incisions hurts when I bend over too much but I pretty much have no pain except for some general soreness in my abdominal muscles. My surgeon went through all of the things that can go wrong in having the surgery. The mortality numbers they tell you are about 1 in 200 but from my understanding that number is for all GBP surgeries. I'm sure the number has gone down with time as they perfect the technique. The lap procedure has fewer complications than the open procedure. Also, your health, age, and gender play a major role. I am 37 with few comorbidities and was walking about 2 miles per day prior to surgery. Maybe that is why I have had so few problems. Even so, I knew there was a possibility that something serious could go wrong, but I also knew that there was an absolute certainty that I would develop serious medical problems in the next 5 years if I didn't have this done.
