Guest guest
I wouldn't till you go see the Doctor. Our usual protocol for Armour is raise it by no more than a half a grain every 3-5 weeks if you still have hypo symptoms. If you take that as well, there is no way of knowing what thyroid hormones ARE in it in what amounts. *Artistic Grooming * Hurricane, WV Fat cat? Diabetes? Guest guest
To get an idea if you are overdosing, here is some information. The healthy human thyroid makes about 4-1/2 to 5 grains of ARmour equivlelent a day. This is about 333 to 370 mcg of Synthroid equivelent. 1 grain of Armour = 74 mcg of Synthroid (roughly) Take your Armour dose and multiply it times 74. If you are taking any T3, multiply that dose by 4 to get Synthroid equivelent mcg units. Take the results in Synthroid units above and add them all together to get the total dose. This will give you your total daily dose in Synthroid mcg units. Take your total and see how close it is to 333 to 370 mcg. 333 to 370 mcg is roughly the total amount of Synthroid equivelent that a healthy thryoid makes in a day. If the total you are taking is over about 222 mcg or about 3 grains, then you need to be careful and not make any more dose raises without waiting at least 4 weeks between them. Once you get up past 3 grains or over 222 mcg you can have a problem with T4 slowly building up in the blood and not know it is happening. So, if you make raises too soon, you can inadvertantly go very hyperthyroid unexpectedly and get into trouble. The rule of thumb is that you can't overdose on a dose less than what your healthy thyroid would make because your pituitary will drop production of TSH to tell your thyroid to make that much less, keeping your daily total somewhere around 4-1/2 to 5 grains or less. Generally, you can't overdose untill your dose gets near 4-1/2 to 5 grains if you are a healthy person. However, hypothryoids tend to be very sensitive to thryoid hormone. If you make dose raises that are too big at one time, you can over tax your adrenals and this could send you into a crisis situation. If you don't have enough adrenal output for the amount of thyroid you are taking, thryoid builds up in the blood and cannot get into tissues. This then exposes the heart to too much thyroid hormone and it can be like overdosing on thyroid. You can also get into problems with big dose raises by having nutritional deficiencies like anemia and mineral deficiencies. All these will make thyroid hormone much more potent. So, the best thing to do is to make dose raises that are small, like 1/4 grain at a time. When your total dose per day gets around 3 grains or 222 mcg of Synthroid then you need to really slow down on dose raises and wait 4 weeks or more between any more raises. Monitor your temperature and pulse and symptoms. If your temperature starts to average over 98.6 and your pulse is 84 beats per minute or more, or you become shakey and weak, then you need to back down on the thyroid. http://www.drrind.com/tempgraph.asp In the old days before the TSH test, average thyroid doses were 3 to 5 grains a day or about 222 to as high as 500 mcg Synthroid. Be careful if you are getting up there near the upper end of what a thyroid makes in a day. Go slow!!! This is so you don't take a chance of gong too hyperthyroid too quickly so that you can correct it easily or so that you don't end up at the hospital getting more drastic corrections of too much thyroid in the blood.
