I bought an acer laptop from Tiger Direct right before going to Mexico.

I got it for like $400 after rebates. It has a wireless card already in

it and I just bought a run of the mill router at office max or somewhere

and hooked to my desktop. If I'd had a little bit more $$ available I

would have gotten a Dell. But I couldn't get what this one offered for

the price from Dell. I love my laptop tho. Right now I'm laying on the

bed checking email. LOL! :-)

Mike,

I've set up this sort of home stuff for friends, relatives, etc. I've

got a network engineering degree for what that's worth too. I also work

with wireless and security technology at work. I've recently ordered

some new equipment for my and my parents network because our areas are

getting saturated with networks and phones that are beginning to

interferring with our range.

Unless you're buying a used laptop the need for wireless connectivity

is not going to be an issue for consideration with most laptops you'd

be buying. I'm also toying with the idea of getting a smart phone or

other handheld device I can use on 802.11 networks.

What you would need to consider as far as model/brand would be what

sort of SLA (service level agreement) you could deal with. Would you

want/need on site service, phone service, mail service, manufacturer

length, three years, more?

Also, what are you going to be using the laptop for? You can use a VERY

low end laptop to get online. If you plan on doing some gaming,

graphics, sound, video, processor or memory intensive applications then

that could affect which model and price range you're going to be

playing with.

Mike,

I think I would just need a low end lap top for internet surfing, with a

pretty large HD so I can use it as a backup for music and photos and the

like.........

I was looking at Dell's site and they have great prices on some

referb/returns lap tops......They almost all have wireless cards already.

What is the difference in the wireless cards? I see some have a 1370 and

some a 1470 I think.......Can I assume the larger number is better?

Ill keep throwing questions your way when I get around to buying one.

thanks

1390 and 1490 are model numbers of Dell wireless cards right? I

didn't see you talking about cards before. I'm confused, I thought we

were talking about networking equipment and/or laptop hardware.

Regarding network equipment if you can relate the layout of your

house and any areas outside you want to use a laptop in as well as

population density or better still if you have an idea of cordless

phone and wireless network usage in your area.
