I don't consider this a diet. You are exactly right, it's a lifestyle

change. Hard to get through to people that are just so ignorant.

I think the answer to this question is yes and no. We are on a " diet "

so to sopeak at first until we get the weight off. Then afterwards, we

don't necessarily " diet " we have by then had a change in our

lifestyles where we may eat whatever we want, but we do it with a

different mindset......say for instance you want a cookie, ok eat one,

but not the whole package. You want pizza, ok, have a piece, but not

the whole pizza (like I used to do). Yes, we have to stay away from

those things at first so we can get all the weight off we want off and

then after we can SLOWLY get back to eating normal things, not for the

love of food, but to maintain our goal weight, cause we do want to

eventually stop losing.

So yes we are dieting, but we aren't on a " diet " ....does that make any

sense?

Donna, no it is not a diet. It is a complete life over haul, and

anyone who has had the surgery knows that information. For the rest

of the world, you do not owe anyone an explanation of your diet. I am

amazed by the fact that people think they have a right to question WLS

people about their diets, and yet I can remember when I was putting

down four to six slices of pizza at one setting, and NO ONE said

anything to me about it. I guess, if you want to respond, I would

tell this person that You work very hard, and you have completely

changed your lifestyle... do not be shy to point out this is not the

" easy " way out and you have committed yourself to healthy eating and

living which includes a balanced diet and plenty of exercise. If it

bothers you about this person, I would politely explain the above and

then tell that person that this is the last time you will be

discussing this issue with them as it is a boundary, and he does not

have the right to question you about it. You have the right to

reserve your own privacy. Do not feel bad about not wanting to

explain your whole life away to people... take care lisamathis

Hi Donna,

It's NOT a diet! It's a life-altering way you have to eat. Not

hardly a diet, though " we " have to eat a different way.....this is

forever!

Technically diet means more than one thing. It can be regulated

eating but it can also mean simply WHAT you, a group, everyone else

eats.

I would say though, that what this person thinks it to be, isn't what

you think it is. Dieting alone rarely works. Exercise alone too helps

but doesn't work long term without diet. It's a total package.

If you're sitting down with this guy all casual like and it's part of

the converstation then you can explain your thoughts. But don't do it

from the standpoint that he's wrong or ignorant just tell him that is

how you view it and that when he asks about diet in the future you're

going to assume he really would be saying, " How's EVERYTHING going? "

Nah it's not that hard. If they are that ignorant then I just adapt

their questions to suit my understanding along with a little bit of

ignoring their ignorance. It works well, for me at least.

Being too picky? Anything said would probably be wrong. " How's

your surgery workin' for you? " Not a good choice. You could

reply " How's your liquid diet going? Are ya sticking to it! " No, you

won't get any points for that one.

It would be nice if 'they' could learn to say something like " Your

looking good. How are things going? " Then you could get him for

sexual harrassment as him noticing your looks could be misconstrued

as sexual in nature.

Granted some people are rude and some just don't know the proper way

to ask. How about educating him kindly? " My progress after surgery

is going well or great(pick one). Thank you for asking. " or " How do

I look? " or " I would prefer not to discuss this with you. " or " I

would prefer you ask me ....... you fill in the way you want to be

asked. "

Is it a major issue that will destroy your life style change? Is it

worth the energy you used to discuss it? Enjoy the fact that you

are changing for the positive and look for that in everything in

your life!

Be Happy that your changes are happening.

My metamorphosis will begin on December 27!

May you have a Merry Christmas! And a partridge in a pear tree!

Donna, I totally agree with you. We are not on a diet. This is a tool

and it's part of a whole new way of life/eating. I don't know why

people ask questions like that anyway. I have this friend and every

time she see me she asks me what I am down to. How much do you weigh

now? I don't mind saying the numbers, 132!!!!! but every time she sees

me? Now she is bigger than me and she seems to make it some sort of

competition. I am not competing with anyone, I am just happy to have

lost the weight and I am off my blood pressure meds too. Now if I

could get rid of my pain, I'd be in business!!!!!!!!! Take Care Donna

and don't let people like that bother you. in CA

That irony for ya. You shouldn't have the surgery but once you do

tell me what you eat. It's hilarious my kids tell me, " Yeah but dad

not everyone is all about what they eat like you are " when I complain

about the woman I'm dating and what she eats/feeds her family, my

folks, or their friends eat.

Seriously? I'm freaking 270lbs and I was almost 500 in August of

2005. People think I'm into eating healthy? Please. I do have people

stopping by my office for advice though. They invite me for walks and

stuff too. Sometimes they'll invite me to lunch and I'll suggest a

different place like Subway or Noodles instead of a pizza place. It's

really cool.

I agree that it is not a diet it is a lifestyle change. However, It

probably isn't wise to take it so offensively unless they do it

intentionally. He may just be making conversation. Or may be trying to

be nice.
