Joanie, many thanks for your warm congrats! You'll be right along with

us soon, I'm sure.

As for Splenda breaking down like sugar, that's the first I've ever

heard that. Actually, Splenda is missing two key molecules that sugar

has, otherwise is identical. Those two missing molecules, from what I

understand, keep Splenda from being broken down the way sugar is.

Perhaps your surgeon is mistaking Splenda (or sucralose in the

generic) with sugar alcohols? That would be my guess.

For more information, visit www.splenda.com . They also have some

great recipes to use post-op.

Hi Joanie,

I have never had any problems with Splenda and my dietician has advocated

using Splenda.

Congrats to Cat and Kris and anyone else who

got their date recently - I hope to join you soon!

And -- WOW! That is an incredible weight loss

with no exercise!!!! Congrats to you, too and I hope

they find out whatever that pain is!

Also -- My surgeon told me Splenda breaks down the same as

sugar in your system and should NOT be eaten after surgery,

yet it seems like some of you use it. Has anyone else

heard this, or had any problems with Splenda? I love

the stuff.

Are you kidding me? Splenda " breaks down the same as sugar " ? That's

complete bunk. I'd ask for a second opinion or clinical source on

that dung heap. Are you CERTAIN they said that? If so I'd like their

name/number to call and confirm that.

As I indicated earlier, Mike is spot-on. It's because of the chemical

structure, because it's missing two of the molecules on the chain that

sugar has, it can't be broken down by the body. Sucralose is the

sweetener of choice for diabetics for this reason. I can vouch. I'm

diabetic and when I eat something made with sucralose, there is no

rise of any kind in blood sugar, so this surgeon is misinformed on

this topic. Information about how sucralose is metabolized isn't some

huge secret. It's readily available on the web. Like I suggested

before, maybe he's confusing it with sugar alcohols.

Directly from the Splenda website:

" How is sucralose handled by the body?

Although sucralose is made from sugar, the body does not recognize it

as sugar or a carbohydrate. It is not metabolized by the body for

energy, so it is calorie-free. "

Before I went forward with a surgeon who made the statement he did,

I'd be sure to question him on this topic. If the answer isn't

reflective of what's said above, then dump him and get a surgeon who

gives you correct information. If he doesn't get it right, this would

represent a huge, waving red flag to me.

Splenda was what I was told to use by my nutritionist. Just goes to

show how different surgeons say different things. :-) What did your

surgeon recommend you use? I like splenda over equal or sweet n low

because it doesn't have that funky after taste.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
,
He didn't recommend anything in particular, but
just told me that about Splenda. And I love Splenda!
But, I just may ignore him since it seems to work
for everyone else! I'm still waiting for Mike to call
his office and see what he tells him.
Merry Christmas, all!
Ihave found that my surgeon doesn't know nearly as much as the dietician and
he supposedly helped with the diet portion of the post operative manual.
I've gotten a lot more detailed advice from my dietician than from my
surgeon or his PAs. Plus she's a VERY hot 31 year old single woman so
I try to make a lot of appointments with her to answer all my
questions. Making up questions is getting a bit tough but I'm still
managing. She's a vegetarian though so I'm able to resist her eyes on
that alone. It's tough though.
Mike, You are bad!!! I have an idea for you though. We can take a poll
of new questions for you to ask her! I mean we have like 5,000
members? That could keep you going for a while. And then you could ask
her to help you with some research and would she try on some
's Secret for you. LOL in CA
Tracey,
You are really bad, but it might keep Mike busy for at least a little while.
